I give this 3 stars overall because the mono mix is rather muddy in spots, especially with the vocals, which are too drenched in reverb. I can recommend this disc--nice open sound, if bordering on overproduced. Nice dynamics, big bottom frequencies and a huge snare drum make this release quite possibly the quintessential 1980s recording.

Just got mine yesterday.
I found this to be a LOT more listenable than the original CD, which had that wretched 80s snare sound that prevented me from turning it up much past half volume (a'la The Sisters Of Mercy's Floodland CD, another notorious 80s release blighted by "snare-itis").

This one was released without Davis's consent - it's compiled from off-cuts from his collaborations with Gil Evans. Musically, it's a real mixed bag with no real winners, and some are downright irritating enough to skip past without a second thought.

Songwise, there is very little reason to complain, and the playing is also excellent. Not all the songs are classics, but enough of them here are strong enough to make this a 4-star album, easily.
