Another great job by the Analogue Productions crew in making CCR sound incredibly warm.
This, CCR's 5th (and last 'great') album in 3 years, was made in 1970 and has a ton of hits. The fantastic stereo sound on this SACD really makes songs like the 11 minute "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," "Up Around the Bend," "Who'll Stop the Rain" and "Travelin' Band" sparkle.
You can tell the Analogue Productions folks considered their work on this and "Willy & The Poorboys" to be a labor of love.
Some may hesitate shelling out $25 for a 35 minute SACD (heck, I did) but I've never regretted purchasing this or "Willy..." If you like CCR and desire great sound, get them.

Songwise, there is very little reason to complain, and the playing is also excellent. Not all the songs are classics, but enough of them here are strong enough to make this a 4-star album, easily.
While there is no doubt that this is one of Creedence Clearwater Revival's best albums, there is definitely a sonic difference between this one and the analog warmth of the earlier "Bayou Country" that needs to be mentioned. The sound of this disk is noticeably drier and more transisterized.
Steve Hoffman did the mastering for this one, as with all the Analogue releases of the CCR catalog, so the responsibility obviously does not lie in the mastering. Likewise, although the number of tracks on master tapes went from 8 to 16 by the early 1970s, the recording medium (analog tape) remained the same, so the reason for the dry sound must lie elsewhere.
I believe the reason for the drier, more brittle sound of this recording is the recording console, as there was a change from the old tube mixers to transistorized boards in the late 1960s. If you do an A/B switch between any of the songs on Cosmo's and the tunes on Bayou, you will hear what I mean.
Therefore, I have to dock the sound quality of this by one star, as it just does not have the warmth of the earlier CCR albums in this wonderful re-issue series.

It's my favourite CCR album.
I had to admit the Japanese remastered SHM-cd (UCCO-9197) is far better, the SACD sound flatter and darker.
I don't know what's wrong with this DSD recording because it's often the opposite, usually there's more clarity and presence on SACD.
