DP's umpteenth album is pretty much consistent with their most popular ones: it's catchy, somber, and deals with all the usual DP themes of alienation, sin and redemption. Since producer Don DeVito re-mixed this one in 1998, this often-overlooked LP has really come into its own. Not nearly as epic as "Blood On The Tracks" or the multi-platinum follow-up "Desire", "Street Legal" has an easy, down-to-earth charm. This one makes a case for having all of Dan Lanois-produced albums released on SACD. Sonically, this one is a feast for fans of atmospheric sound effects, be it tremolo-ed electric guitars, spooky swamp reverb or sounds of the nocturnal insects of Louisiana. Only four tunes, and none are overlong? Amazing, but true! HBS is a soul/funk classic that Mobile Fidelity has really done justice to. I've rarely heard high-end this good on anything 1969-era that didn't have Glyn Johns or Eddie Kramer producing or engineering.

A good, solid stereo remaster: there is some tape hiss at the song intros, but overall the sound is crisp, clean and very punchy at the low end. The hi-res transfer even allows the listener to discern that "Proud Mary" is actually a very narrow stereo mix, rather than mono. A big improvement over ... more |
