Just a quickie review. Don't own the redbook version of this record. I see that there is a remaster cd out of this done on Apogee UV 22 converter that I am sure sounds great but I have no first hand knowledge. Sorry, Portrait in Jazz just ruins this disc for me. I just don't care for the content here as much as PIJ but the sound is just as good. This is more "out there" jazz where PIJ is more mainstream and can be appreciated by anyone not just Evans fans. Cheers. |

I got this SACD and EXPLORATIONS on the highest recommendations. To me, the content on PIJ is much better than EXPLORATIONS. My wife even likes PIJ and she never listens to music and thinks Brubeck's Take Five is the only jazz recording worth listening to. It's just simpler more approachable jazz ... more |

This one's been a long time comin' and worth the wait. Very clean sound. Incredible for tapes made in 1971 at a live show in the Fillmore East. Tom Dowd knew what he was doing. Chas, Eric and the boys never sounded better. I think all the hits are here. No real clinkers. You can tell House of the Rising Sun was recorded a long time ago in a less than state of the art studio in a short amount of time. SACD has a way of showing you the close ups, warts and all.
