| This one's been a long time comin' and worth the wait. Very clean sound. Incredible for tapes made in 1971 at a live show in the Fillmore East. Tom Dowd knew what he was doing. Not sure who the DSD transfer is credited to but they did a good job as well. The album was in my collection for a lot of years and the cd since it came out. I expect I will have the SACD until the next perfect media format comes out. What can I say, if you dig the Brothers, you will buy this disc.

| I'll agree with JR that the sound is clean and that the album is a true rock/blues classic, but it's all down hill from there. Like so many SACD reissues, I find this one a little thin and compressed in the dynamics department (when compared with an ORIGINAL Capricorn labeled LP), but I did not do any comparisons to earlier digital transfers, where I would expect the SACD to win the contest by a slight margin. I must say that with all of the disappointment I’ve been having with many SACD reissues of vintage recordings that it’s probably time for me to come to the realization that the engineers in the music industry are their own worst enemies.

| The sound on this record is amazing if you take into account the recording date. And the music is ... what it is. I just love it. This is much better than the DTS version. Listen to Gregs voice ... everything sounds as if you would be sitting some 50m from the stage. I can recommend this record to everybody who likes the white blues.

What an extraordinary album. The level of improvisation is on par with the best I've heard in Jazz. I think Duane Allman would have fit in perfectly with Miles Davis - the improv's are that good. Duane's guitar playing was simply masterful, and I could just lie back and let the guitar wash over me. Relaxing and thrilling at the same time.
Another cool thing is the use of two drummers, each one appears on opposite sides of the soundstage. I'm not sure, but I'm thinking that one side dealt with cymbals and higher frequencies, while the other side operated at lower frequencies.
This album is outstanding. It's unquestionably a rock/blues album, and I should emphasize BLUES. But that's just a container. As mentioned before, it's improvisation works as jazz as well. Many of their songs are wrung out way longer than the original songs, and to great effect. It seem that the vocals come in during the beginnings, and then take a back seat during the improv's, and finally come back near the ends of the tunes.
5 stars easily on the performance.
The sound quality is a different story. I'd call it competent for sure, but there's a fine haze over the instruments in the softer parts, hidden by the louder parts. I suppose it's tape hiss, and it's a fairly fine grain of tape hiss. But at the same time, it seems like the instruments were covered by a light, grainy cover, and then assembled together on a black background - if that makes sense. I mean that you can tell the instruments where added in because of a fizzy sound around them. Seeing as the recording is 40 years old, I suppose this is to be suspected. On loudspeakers, this is not as noticeable as on headphones.
When the band does play together loudly, none of the aforementioned distortion can be heard. As the album has a fair share of quiet moments and loud moments, I'm kind of stuck on a recommendation for the sound quality. I would like to give this recording a 3.75 out of 5.
I should say this. As with my favorite rock album of all time, Dark Side of the Moon, I will look for some "pristine" version of this album to come out - just like I do with DSOTM. After only a couple of listens, it's clear to me that this album is among the very best of any rock album that has ever been made.

| Sound is really a pleasant suprise- I find this quality very unusual among rock recordings. A vast improvement over the original SACD- in every repect. This disc is certainly going to get some more use.

| Wow, I can't believe someone gave this 2* for the sonic sound. To each his or her own, I know we all have different ears... but wow... this sounded excellent to me. Duane's guitar never sounded so vivid and full. Now I'll admit, I do not have a record player, so I've never heard the vinyl version. But I can say unequivocally that SACD sounds much better than the red book cd version that I've heard a thousand times over. I think I bought this SACD for $20something dollars, so only a few more dollars more than the regular CD. Strongly recommend!
