| Fantasy did a pretty good job on this SACD. The piano sounds nice, and the bass is distinct. I got this as part of a sale through BMG Music Service. I've had a few Evans/LaFaro discs over the years which I've really enjoyed, and this one is no exception. It is about $9 cheaper than the Anologue Productions' SACDs ("...Village Vanguard" & "Waltz for Debbie"). I have no doubt that those AP titles will sound better than the Fantasy titles, but I got this on sale and it was available. Good enough for me.

The first of a number of studio albums, this one contains a lot of standards. The playing is beyond reproach - and in line with the other highlights from the Evans discography. I particularly like 'Someday My Prince Will Come', great slow intro that leads the trio into a swinging version of this tune. I must say that this Bill Evans disc sounds very nice indeed. It was my first Fantasy title - I have four now and I can certainly recommend them. A clear recording with the piano dead center. The difference between the CD layer and the SA-CD plays out according to familiar lines - more air, better decay, fuller sound, especially the bass has more body, the CD layer sounds 'pinched' in comparison. Night and Day? No, but clear enough. It's in the realm of 'instantly recognisable'. Is it as good as the Analogue Productions Evans discs? The APO Waltz For Debbie + SATVV discs have the bass left, the drums inside left and the piano right. Listening to them side by side and I think that the APO discs are just that little bit more natural or analog sounding. But comparison's are not that meaningful here since they are different recordings altogether. Well done Fantasy !

| I got this SACD and EXPLORATIONS on the highest recommendations. To me, the content on PIJ is much better than EXPLORATIONS. My wife even likes PIJ and she never listens to music and thinks Brubeck's Take Five is the only jazz recording worth listening to. It's just simpler more approachable jazz music. The SACD transfer is pretty good considering the age of the tapes and sounds ten times better than the SACD edition of TENOR MADNESS. If you can only buy one Bill Evans SACD and want the studio sound vs. the live sound of Village Vanguard, buy this disc.

| stereo sonics: and again it´s astounding what fabulous records they made in ´59. Taking the age into account, it is a 5 star recording.

| This is an excellent jazz albums, the playing is excellent and consistent through all the tracks. That said, this recording feels its age, the lack of topend extension or even some top-end muddiness is clearly audible especially when compared to excellent recordings Yamamoto "Autumn in Seattle" or Misty.
