Kei Akagi Trio: Modern Ivory        (1 of 1 found this review helpful)
  March 6, 2008

This is my second Kei Akagi recording and I am liking this more than the other one ('A Hint Of You'). Mr. Akagi and his bandmates (Tomokazu Sugimoto on bass and Tamaya Honda on drums) play the following 9 wonderful and original piano tunes; 1) Dolphin Dance, by Herbie Hancock 2) Peresina by McCoy ... more
Kei Akagi Trio: A Hint of You          (1 of 1 found this review helpful)

I never really warmed to this disc. Been waiting to write a review until I listened to it multiple times during a period of a few months, but it still leaves me somewhat underwhelmed. Who is Kei Agaki? Let me borrow a few lines from the Allmusic Guide: "Born in Japan, Akagi lived in Cleveland ... more
Blonde on the Rocks - Shoji Yokouchi Quartet        (4 of 4 found this review helpful)

The best shirt ever (?) captured on a cover :-). This disc swings like crazy. It's a guitar album full of straight ahead jazz tunes. I do not think sonically there are any criticisms to be had on this recording. Full bodied driving bass, direct and tuneful electric jazz guitar (two of them), ... more
Miles Davis: Kind of Blue        (8 of 9 found this review helpful)

This is only about sound quality. The big question many SA-CD people ask is whether there is a sound quality difference between the JSACD and the US or Euro pressings of KOB... The European pressed SA-CD has more presence and timbre than my 1997 US pressed CD remaster (CD 64935), but not by a huge ... more
Julian Bream - Popular Classics for Spanish Guitar        (13 of 14 found this review helpful)
  October 14, 2007

Julian Bream (UK, 1933) is widely recognized as one of the top classical guitarists of our time. Personally I was not very familiar with his work and I did a little research on his playing style. It transpires that two of his major influencers were Django Reinhardt and Andres Segovia. Plus he was a ... more

Ten years and new management
January 7, 2013
Thanks for all the hard work....this is truly a reference site. I looked up my first review - 27 January 2003. A that time we were looking at when the amount of reviews was going to overtake the amount of titles listed on the site. No such worries anymore :-) I also recall being the most active reviewer, for a little while at least , well, no such ... more
Where have all the members gone?

Just a short note from another early member.... Keep the faith 'Zeus':-) - this site is still unique and the only authoritative source on SA-CD releases imho. I am busy putting together a new system and I will probably start posting some SA-CD reviews though I have not bought a lot of new stuff on SA-CD (my collection stabilized around the 229 ... more
Discussion: Ray Sings, Basie Swings - Ray Charles
October 21, 2007
I feel I need to annotate my review with this note. Recently I listened to this recording in a different way on on a different (and much better than my own) system. I learned something valuable. I learned to listen better. And to be able to better discern between over-processed or digitised recordings and more analog-sounding ones. I heard the ... more
Accidently posted under wrong title - please remove
October 7, 2007
I accidently posted my 'Ray Sings Basie Swings' review under the wrong title (see http://www.sa-cd.net/showreviews/3830#5040_). I could not find a way to remove my post. Stephen, please delete it. Thanks. (I will buy that Eighty Eights disc next time I'm on Tokyo and would like to review it as well :-) ... more
Listing JSACD's
September 9, 2005
I haven't made a comparison. Some 'people in the know' have told me that (some of the JSACD) sound better, but if that is indeed the case, I doubt whether it's by a large margin. ... more
