I have been a big fan of the Venus records and the Eddie Higgins Trio. This version of the trio consists of Eddie with John Pizzarelli on guitar and Jay Leonhart on bass, so this is a drumless trio. I bought this one because I have been very pleased with the Venus SACDs that have been coming out the last year or so and because I am a fan on Michel Legrand as well as Steve Kuhn. When I get a Steely Dan SACD my expectation is very high. Countdown is not my favorite from the Dan but any Dan release is superior to 90% of what is out there. I was hesitant to pick this up after the recent release of Behind the Sun but this is superior album and release. The playing has more vitality than Behind the Sun, which seemed to be phoned in.
