Reviews: Eddie Higgins Trio: Don't Smoke in Bed

Performance:   Sonics:
I have been a big fan of the Venus records and the Eddie Higgins Trio. This version of the trio consists of Eddie with John Pizzarelli on guitar and Jay Leonhart on bass, so this is a drumless trio. The playing is good but I have two complaints. First regarding the sound quality. Jay's bass sounds about average as far as the recording is concerned. On Steve Kuhn's I Will Wait For You, a very fine Venus SACD, the bass presentation is excellent, but not on this one. I do like John's playing normally and it is fine here, my complaint is that it does not sound like he and Eddie are playing together. They sound like they are each doing their own thing without regard to whatever the other is playing. This has been the worse of the Venus SACDs that I have listened to but even with that it is still a good purchase, just not as good as other Venus ones, which have up until this time been at the top of the heap. Do not take this as a overall negative review. The songs and most of the playing is very good, these two complaints are minor but keep this from being among the very best.
