I love love love this performance. Ella and Louis are just magical together. I believe that this, along with a bunch of other Verve stuff was recorded on 30ips tape, as opposed to "standard" 15ips. This is one of those albums where Mobile Fidelity's "warts and all" approach absolutely kills what could have been an awesome release. It's clear to hear that this album was done on the best sounding tape machines available. The album is very tight, very detailed and very dynamic. As with other EWF releases, it is also very bright, almost to the point of ear fatigue. So knock that treble control down a bit. |

Great overall performance and recording. Nothing too out of the ordinary for a 60s jazz record. Typical Analogue Productions sound with tight bass and clear tonality. Not a crazy amount of "space" in the recording - everything seems to be fairly tight miced.

Compared to some of the earlier Doobie MFSL releases, this is definitely flatter with less reverb. Definitely great clean, spacious sound though. A little peaky in the midrange and lacking in treble - nothing a bit of EQ can't fix. |
