This is a slow tune record - which does not make it easier to play by the musicians, but they succeed very well indeed. One of my favorites from the Venus Records collection. Archie Shepp plays beautifully and is excellently backed by a very competent trio with Idris Muhammad on drums (not Billy Drammond as stated in the notes above).

This is a wonderful record. Blues at it's very finest. Six stars for the performance (Lightnin' has always been one of my favorites). I like live recordings, and this is one of the best on SACD. Waters is a competent player and Opus 3 is competent when it comes to recording technique. What a brilliant match this makes. I like Mattias for his soft playing style, which is also demonstrated on some BIS discs. It's very relaxing to listen to this and sonic quality is at the top. Opus 3 has made use of the subwoofer channel on this disc, which is not the case on any of their other releases (as far as I know). |
