One of my favorites from the Venus Records collection. Archie Shepp plays beautifully and is excellently backed by a very competent trio with Idris Muhammad on drums (not Billy Drammond as stated in the notes above).

Recorded in 24-bit (not in DSD), but sound quality is among the best ever heard on Jazz-SACD.

Highly recommended. Also check out Archie Shepp's "Deja Vu" on same label.

Tenor saxophone legend Archie Shepp plays nine well known ballads, but everyone who knows Shepp, will know that this is not a sweet and lovely ballad session. This is music for the head, although it is highly emotional, too. He can blow the whole world`s pain through his sax and at the same time his confounded lines sound very sophisticated – breathtaking. The wonderful accompanying and soloing of his band mates, each one a master, makes this disk highly recommended. Especially because the sound is perfect, rich of colour, very good and imaging, air for the instruments to breath, palpable, very dynamic, brilliant.

I was never a big fan of the way Archie Shepp played the sax but after listening to the reissue by Venus jazz of this CD I've learned to enjoy it . Especially the way the trio is playing to back him up. five stars on the music and the quality of the SA CD.
