A. Shepp ts, J. Hicks p, G. Mraz b, I. Muhammad ds, Venus 1996. Tenor saxophone legend Archie Shepp plays nine well known ballads, but everyone who knows Shepp, will know that this is not a sweet and lovely ballad session. This is music for the head, although it is highly emotional, too. He can blow the whole world`s pain through his sax and at the same time his confounded lines sound very sophisticated – breathtaking. The wonderful accompanying and soloing of his band mates, each one a master, makes this disk highly recommended. Especially because the sound is perfect, rich of colour, very good and imaging, air for the instruments to breath, palpable, very dynamic, brilliant.
