I can't even locate a track listing for this one. Anyone know what is on it?

Looks like this album has been reissued by Venus in SACD format, as has Shepp's quartet disc Deja Vu-- retitled French Ballads.
Claude will shoot me for saying this, but I like Venus's in-your-face sonics. Somehow they seem appropriate to Shepp's full-throated approach to these standards.

True Ballads will be available on 2/19/14 and French Ballads (Deja Vu) will be available from CDJapan on 3/19/14 for $34 each(US) and both are single~layered SACDs!

*Bang* ;-)
On many of their albums, Venus uses a lot of dynamic compression. That alone is responsible for this type of sound. The mastering engineer butchered otherwise great recordings, including on the SACDs.
This album isn't concerned as much by this, with a DR value of 10, which is still OK.

But other (CD) releases, such as Archie Shepp "True Blue" or the Eric Alexander "Gentle Ballads" series have DR6-7, which is in the "loudness war" league. The sound is dynamically lifeless.
Because they are single layer discs, I can't check the DR value of the other Venus SACDs.
