In the midst of dull to average SACD Mahler series from Boulez, Zander, and MTT, and one-shots (on SACD) from Kaplan and Chailly, I find this Litton Mahler 2nd surprisingly refreshing. I think it's very easy to be sonically very impressed with this album. But it sounds very over produced, and rarely natural. The superimposed cannon shots and the synchronized-in chorus (they were not in the same place as the orchestra) do not sound well-integrated and are somewhat annoying ... more |

I am thoroughly enjoying this album. I have generally found Krall to be very cold as an interpreter, but in this album she seems inpired. The sound is very well engineered and natural. OK, I'll bite and be the first person to review this one. I must preface by saying that I have generally not enjoyed much Sting's solo (post Police) work, finding them bland. However, this album when it came out was so very different from his other stuff, that it stands out in his output.

This is a refreshing disk to have in the SACD catalog. I think the performances from Neville Marriner and the soloists are excellent. The sound is fuller than redbook, and almost beg you to turn it up. The two disks in the set go by so fast, it leaves you wanting for more. It was nice to hear early ... more |
