Oscar Peterson is unique in many respects - perhaps in all respects. His style always makes me feel upbeat. Rhythmically and dynamically enormously infectious, the man just swings like no one else. The story about these 6 recordings is well known - just check out AMG if you want to read up on it. It's all world class piano trio jazz with OP's signature runs. Just check out "Who Can I turn To". Wow. It's less about pyrotechnics and more about carrying the tune. The swing and sense of melody on this album is just outstanding. Sam Jones on bass is providing finger snapping rhythmn's and some nice fills and transitions, as does Bob Durham on drums, but the show is really about the master. The sound quality is excellent with nice weight to the large piano and a good soundstage - I may change my mind later and give it 5 stars. There are piano recordings that are better - such as Artegra's recording of the Chris Lomheim Trio (See my review). Not by much, and perhaps it's a matter of taste rather than recording quality. I just find the Lomheim disc's crystalline character very appealing. But what the heck, this is great music. One to play over and over and over again. And I am certainly doing that !
I have an LP verson of this album and interestingly it has a different track numbering, as well as different tracks altogether. It's a PAUSA vesion (PR 7044) of the MPS recording and it has 8 tracks(as opposed to the SA-CD's 6) and in a different order. These are the LP tracks: 1*. Travelin' On, 2*. Emily, 3*. Sax No End, 4. Who Can I Turn To (side 2) 1. In A Mellotone, 2*. Quiet Nights, 3. Green Dolphin Street, 4. Nica's Dream. The ones marked with a * you won't find on the SA-CD. The SA-CD has 'Summertime' and 'Sometimes I am Happy' which do not appear on the LP. The SA-CD represents the original MPS record and PAUSA issued an LP with differents tracks.
