It is; indeed perhaps the most fascinating score I know of. The texts alone would deserve publication in a book format, with an accompanying volume just for commentary.

Would love to hear your view of it once you've had a chance to listen and study it adequately enough. The performance is first-rate, although I still, fairly regularly, go back to the fragment recorded of it by Abbado for Sony in the early 1990s (in stereo only, of course).

Happy listening,

PT

Hey PT (and everyone else),

I ordered this from Amazon back when you recommended it (by far the cheapest price); today it finally shipped and Amazon no longer stocks it (there are a few sellers on the marketplace that claim to have it). Given that European retailers list it as shipping in 1 to 3 days, or more, I'm guessing that there aren't many copies left. So if anyone else is interested in this, buy now!

Thanks again for the recommendation. I'm doing a lot of traveling for the next week or so, so I probably won't be able to listen to it until the end of the month.

Hi Seth, Glad you managed to grab a copy while they're still available. Hope you'll find it intriguing and enjoyable to the same degree as I do. Despite what's stated on the cover, this one's a definite Yes, Yes! Happy travels, PT

Hi Luong,

I'm in group 3. I absolutely LOVE surround sound because it's closer to what I have experienced in a concert hall. Also, I absolutely LOVE recordings that put the listener in the middle of the orchestra as if you are playing within the orchestra, which is an experience that I would never get in real life, but is one of my dreams. So some surround sound recordings have made my dreams come true, in the listening room at least. A few 2 channel stereo recordings from Reference Recordings, are so well done that they give a slight surround effect. It's the only reason that I buy SACDs now. You're right, it's a matter of taste. I thank God for labels like 2L, AIX and a few from DG, LINN, and Mobile Fidelity re-releases from the Vox/Turnabout 4 channel surround recordings (The Ravel Daphnis et Chloé places the choir in the rear just as Ravel intended), and BIS.

Dear Jeff,

You forgot to thank G** for Tacet. Have you got some titles from Tacet since our last posts May 2012 on thread www.sa-cd.net/showthread/86239/86839 This label is the most prolific aggressive mix producer on the market. Its 46th TACET Real Surround Sound disc in 2012, "Crossing the Channel" , was recently reviewed on this site by Polly Nomial.

This label, as you know, also triggers an allergic, or rather misophonic reaction in some MCH listeners, upon simply mentioning that name. For example in post#24 of this thread www.sa-cd.net/showthread/87526/88167 , the poster avoided that name by writing that " 2L is definitely [luong's] ticket". My number One is Tacet that I listed first in the initial post#1 of this thread. In the future if 2L or AIX issues more aggressive mix titles I may change my mind, but not now.

Happy listening,

What????

I always thought that the two orchestras with choirs really are to be placed in stereo formation, so that the main choir (I) comes from the left, whereas the cries "Wen", "Wie" etc (Coro II) should come from the right.

The Ripieno children's choir, however, should come from the organ loft from behind. Now THAT really gives the surround feeling of being in the midst of things. That's how it was performed in the c. 15 times I have sung the work.

And that is how we have recorded this work (BIS-SACD-1500 has a "best-of" of the St. Matthew). Whence does the children's choir come in Jared's mix, if the rear speakers already have been utilized for the Coro II? And how on Earth did he manage to get the music together, provided that he recorded in a reasonably big church? It would be all but impossible to get this to work acoustically and timing-wise, because the Coro II would have to sing "against" their ears, and therefore disharmonically, since sound travels much slower than light.

Robert

1)This is a compilation of BIS mch SACD discs with musicians also in the rear channels (from BIS thread 2754 - 2758)

I was trying to find the thread on repertoire gaps, and was successful with google.
Sadly, not many of the gaps have been filled in the time since those threads took place.
Bissie, are you listening? I was hoping that you might actually be able to use the information in those threads to guide some future Bis' releases.

I am almost always listening and answering (far too verbously) when I think I have anything to say that would interest anyone else but my dear Mother.
But I am at a loss here. What am I supposed to do? We're filling in gaps like there is no tomorrow (indeed, soon there isn't). However, we do have to live as well, and we cannot only do the unknown, which everyone pats our shoulder for but no one buys...

Robert

BIS has a large repertoire of mch SACD (as compared to many other independent labels) with access to a plethora of established soloists and orchestras. BIS is really “filling in gaps like there is no tomorrow” as evidenced in the 4 discs above and the long list of BIS library.
However, there is a gap that BIS chose not to engage: indulging in aggressive mix. I think this is not always good for business. In many instances, sticking to the traditional recording perspective results in mediocrity. For example BIS Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 - Vänskä Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 - Vänskä sounds like a also-ran, middle-of-the row recording among a multitude of mch Beethoven 9. I don’t know about the selling numbers but by looking at the cheap resale price, probably its original sale is not that great.
There is an example where controversy promotes the sale of a Beethoven 9 disc. It is the controversial DVD-A Beethoven no. 9 by Maximianno Cobra, notorious for its slow tempi and stage-perspective mix. Its first issue was circa 2001-2002 went quickly out of print and I could not find it in stores or online in North America during 2007-2011. It is now re-issued in double-sided DVD-A plus a separate DVD-V and again available.

I know that not producing familiar repertoire in stage-perspective mix is BIS’ philosophy. I just wish it accommodated more tactics to lure in aggressive-mix fans and increase sales at the same time.

KUNIKO plays Reich

I recently acquired this disc and listened to it today. Pretty immersive actually. Of course, the music might not be your taste, but if you enjoy minimalism it is a very fine disc.

I am a little late posting on this thread. Since I tend to listen to "Early" classical music, medieval, renaissance, baroque... I would put myself in Group 3 (but by no means limited to it). Recordings of this music seem to favor a more aggressive mix. I am not sure how strict the criteria for this list are. Some recordings on my list might not be a true "Aggressive Mix". They don't all have individual voices or instruments assigned specifically to the rear speakers...as in some recordings of rock music, for example Wish You Were Here. In some of them, the rear channels' "ambience" might just seem to be more enhanced (to some listeners)...with the main focus still on the front speakers. So, perhaps "Aggressive Ambience" might be a better way to describe the sound of some of the releases in my list. But having looked over the other recommendations on this post, I feel these can also be included here.
For those interested...

PSALLAT ECCELESIA Psallat Ecclesia - Schola Solensis
IN NATIVITATE BEATAE MARIAE VIRGINIS In Nativitate Beatae MARIAE Virginis

CHANT WARS Chant Wars - Sequentia/Dialogos
Debated whether or not to include this one, as the sound of the rear speakers is basically ambient, but relatively full.

OCKEGHEM: MISSA PROLATIONUM Johannes Ockeghem 1 - The Sound and The Fury
CHANSONS Chansons - Ensemble Fortuna
MAGGIO VALENTE Maggio Valente - Ensemble Micrologus

WENN ENGEL MUSIZIEREN Wenn Engel musizieren - Musica Freybergensis
PRIULI: SACRORUM CONCENTUUM Priuli: Sacrorum Concentuum - Ecce Grex!
The above 2 are recommended for fans of Gabrieli-style music.

MUSIC AT THE COURT OF JULICH-BERG Music at the Court of Jülich-Berg - La Barca Leyden
RUPERT IGNAZ MAYR: MUSICA SACRA ORF SACD 477
GREETINGS FROM LONDON Greetings from London - Oman Consort

MARAIS: LES VOX HUMAINES Marais: Les Voix Humaines - Hille Perl
Beautiful, relaxed playing.

J.S.BACH: CLAVIERUBUNG III Bach: Clavierübung, Part III - Matteo Messori
VIVALDI: FLUTE CONCERTI OP.10 Vivaldi: Flute Concerti, Op. 10 - Rothert
This Vivaldi SACD has aggressive low end sound too.

MOZART: THE MOZART ALBUM Concerto Köln - The Mozart Album
A 4-channel recording. Great sound and exciting performance.

MOZART: SERENATE NOTTURNE Mozart: Serenata Notturna, Eine kleine Nachtmusik - Savall
Actually only the Notturno for 4 orchestras is the "real" aggressive mix on this release, but the other pieces are just as wonderfully played and have a fairly aggressive mix. (I would also like to recommend Jordi's MINISTRILES REALES as a fairly aggressive mix) Ministriles Reales - Jordi Savall

WAGNER: RING CYCLE Wagner: Der Ring des Nibelungen - Haenchen
As good as Solti and Boehm's Rings are, I still have a soft spot for this one. Gorgeous sound!!

DELIUS: ORCHESTRAL WORKS Delius: Orchestral Works - RPO/Seaman
Just lovely!

Here's another one:

Ginastera: Popol Vuh, Cantata para América Mágica - Asbury

The Cantata Para America Magica has percussion surrounding the listener, similar to the Kroumata Encores disc from BIS.

I quite like both Adams and Reich, but between them I find Reich best in moderation.

That said, I'm wondering if this title is of analogue or DSD origin as it doesn't say anything of this in SA-CD.net listing?

Andy Narell's The Passage is mixed to put you in the middle of the steel orchestra on the MCH selection. It is very good.
