Contrasts, Works for Organ - Vuola        (2 of 2 found this review helpful)
  January 28, 2015

I was curious about the 2 "modern" passacaglias on this disk. And, with some meisterwerke of Buxtehude and J.S. Bach thrown in with the deal, how could I resist! Kari Vuola gives fine accounts of the justly famous Preludes of Buxtehude and Bach. His playing is not as intense or flamboyant as some, ... more

David Baker. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Baker_(composer) Well, that name certainly brings back some happy memories of southern Indiana. I had the privilege of seeing him perform at a small club... "Bear's Place" just off campus in Bloomington during my college days... ... more

Ok.. I finally gave in and bought a copy of this set. Luckily, I could find one on sale. But now after having listened to this set several times, I think I'd even pay retail. It's that good! And I see no reason to hold back on giving it the full 5 stars. (A rosette would be a matter of personal ... more
Royal Recorder Concertos - Music from the Court of King Frederik IV        (4 of 4 found this review helpful)
  October 13, 2013

An illuminating collection from Dacapo of recorder concertos that were likely played at the Danish court in the baroque era.  300 years ago, the countries around the Baltic Sea were involved in the Great Northern War (1700-1721). In addition to that, Copenhagen had to deal with 2 major fires and the ... more
Ginastera: Popol Vuh, Cantata para América Mágica - Asbury        (8 of 8 found this review helpful)
  June 29, 2013

I was looking for some of NEOS's Maderna SACDs when I came across this one. WOW!! "Popol Vuh", a kind of Mayan "Rite of Spring", shows the influence of Stravinsky, Bartok and Prokofiev... , but Alberto Ginastera has created his own unique & exotic world. It's amazing what sounds he was able to ... more

I have no idea what's up with those shipping fees? Sometimes I can get reasonable rates but other times... Kyaa!!! Haven't seen Jurassic World. Generally, I don't have very high expectations for most sequels. Some friends said it was the best one after the original. But I kind of enjoyed the third along with the first one. And even the second one ... more

I know the feeling. :) Actually, I am still trying to get into Fargo the series. The same friend who recommended Man in HC loves Fargo. Now, I loved the movie version, but the series has yet to light my fire...still feeling frosty in Minnesota. LOL! ... more

I was lukewarm on Hannibal for the first 2 or 3 episodes. Then, things started to develop quite nicely. Let's hope Man in the HC gets better too. That's what the commentor said on the link above at any rate. Anyway, I am intrigued because it's based on story by Phillip K. Dick (Bladerunner, Minority Report...) ... more
