This disc was a major disappointment in two channel SACD. Bright and thin. Sounds like DGG used to sound but with some deep bass thrown in. Lacks the sweetness that SACD is known for. Not a pure DSD recording? Has the digital irritation that early CDs were infamous for. Stick with the Reiner on vinyl or SACD.

I haven't listened to it in stereo - but from having heard it in multi-channel NOTHING you said above holds true for me. This is a wonderful sounding disc on my system.

True.
Just got my disk a few days ago and it just somehow did not sound like I expected. Borrowed the Maazel/Pittsburgh (Sony SK 66843) from my friend and compared: Maazel sounds vastly better, clear and smooth with much better solid bass from the organ. Neschling is somehow raw and less solid in (stereo) image. Maazel was recorded with only two omni microphones. I'll measure the dynamic ranges just out of curiosity in the evening, but that does not explain the raw sheen Neschling has.

I measured the dynamic range of Pines of Rome starting one minute before the start of Appian Way and into to the end of that part. So a quiet intertrack ambience in included in the sample.
Neschling/BIS SACD had minimum RMS level at -69 dFSB and the average RMS was -8 dBFS. Maazel/Sony CD had minimum RMS at -73 dBFS and average was -12 dBFS. Peaks on both were close to 0 dBFS as it should be. Thus Maazel CD has more dynamics than Neschling and the playing is also more dynamic than with Neschling.
There has been high praise for the dynamics of Nesching, but it has been bettered already over ten years ago.

So the difference is inaudible.
And before you claim you suspected that the Maazel recording had a wider range, you said: "I'll measure the dynamic ranges just out of curiosity."
I don't understand why so many posters act like jilted lovers when it comes to BIS.
