Sibelius: Symphony No. 1 - Maazel        (5 of 5 found this review helpful)

I would agree with everything above except that the Esoteric discs are hybrid stereo and therefore do have an ordinary CD layer. There is no multi-channel layer as the original was stereo. Decca mixed directly to stereo at the recording sessions and didn't use the three channel system used by ... more
Bizet: Carmen - Karajan (Limited Edition)        (11 of 12 found this review helpful)
  April 19, 2008

This recording was produced by John Culshaw and engineered by Gordon Parry and James Lock in the Sofiensaal in Vienna during November 1963 and was issued the following year in RCA's lavish Soria Series. Decca and RCA had an agreement during the late 50s and early 60s which meant that some RCA ... more
Prokofiev: Humoresque Scherzo etc. - Prague Wind Quintet          (3 of 5 found this review helpful)

I really cannot recommend this disc. I find the recording dull and the performances routine. I expected the wind transcriptions of the Romeo and Juliet music might be fun but after a couple of pieces I just wondered why bother? Refer to my comments on the disc of the fourth concerto to see that I disagree with raffells about this cycle. I think that it may be the exhilaration I get from these performances that I like.

There are quite a lot of microphones. However, it looks that the main pickup is a set of 3 spaced (omnidirectional?) microphones across the front and above the orchestra (on stands), like the Mercury Living Presence set up, plus a pair further back and out presumably for surround. Then a lot of spot microphones. ... more

I prefer physical discs. I like something in my hands and a booklet. They also have a secondhand value. I do download if the cost is considerably less than the disc or I am unsure about recording and it is cheaper to download so the risk is less. Incidentally, too many downloads lack a booklet and informative track listings. eClassical does it ... more
