Thread: Suggestion for improvement of SA-CD.net, here: STEREO vs. MULTICHANNEL

I know this suggestion will cover only a minority of SACDs, but for customers who own just a STEREO SACD player (and no MULTICHANNEL), it is essential.

Unfortunately, some HYBRID CDs have a very odd recording "style":

normal CD part: STEREO
SACD part: MULTICHANNEL only!

So, playing that CD with a SACD STEREO player, it jumps on normal CD mode :-(

With the SA-CD.net information "CONTENT:" respective "MEDIA:", there is no way to distinguish this.

A more precise information on "CONTENT:" for HYBRID CDs might cover my demand, e.g.

Content: Stereo/Multichannel (SACD no STEREO mode)

It is not easy to check that out in advance buying that kind of SACDs.

Thanks to JPC here in Germany, they verified this for instance for:

"Ravel: Bolero, Bizet: Carmen Suite - Semyon Bychkov"

which is one of that kind.

Cheers,
Thomas

This has been discussed on this forum before.
Basically two labels are guilty of this non standardization.
One is the label you have chosen.
The other is a "Club" within Germany and approx 100 titles NOT Listed in sa-cd.net.
Very few other items approx 5 where an error in programming occured for disc space are reported usually in the reviews...One Telarc recently.
Perhaps others on the forum will add to the list.
I am sure some stereo only sacd players can downmix (Fold down) the surround sound layer in the players setup menu.

That there is no stereo SACD for Ravel: Bolero, Bizet: Carmen Suite - Semyon Bychkov is implied by "Content: Multichannel" and that there is a RBCD layer by "Media: Hybrid".

I have never heard of such a function in SACD players. It would not make much sense, when there are only a dozen or so SACDs on the market which are missing a hirez stereo layer.

Downmixing is common with DVD players though.

That's a major difference between DVD and SACD: there's no downmixing for SACD (because the artists would have no control over what the result would sound like).

Some interesting discussions about SACDs without stereo layer:

Claude,
I would suggest you look at any "Universal " player with a euro scart connector.Set sacd to surround and check out what comes out of both the stereo scart and the normal stereo analogue outputs.Voila.
I have a Denon 3910 and I could list quite a few others where a stereo track is bled off the 5,1.
I hinted in another thread about specs of players not being the be all and end all of performance or totally honest. Also, that different world zonal machines may not have a scart but the circuitry prior to the scart is still in place.
Generally speaking the methodology of downmix is similair on all machines , it is only a matter of at which point in the chain dvd (PCM)mixes (folds down) the signal. Its normally after the D to A .The circuit diagram is far better at revealing where the mix which is not switchable out despite several hints in the manual that you can switch all other circuitry off for "better performance" it stays active.
Worse still this added on circuitry contains muting transisters which all add distortion. These can easily be isolated at the risk of the occasional click or switching pops.
