in the latest issue of its online magazine "www.klassikakzente.de" Deutsche Grammophon is anouncing the release of 5 SA-CDs at low price in the Eloquence series. The say they want to get SA-CD known to a wider public since (as they have finally realised)even many great classical music lovers dont know about SA-CD and its benefits. Good decision in my opinion.
The multichannel is derived from the stereo master by the AMSI II process. In another thread someone was complaining about the dissapointing results of using AMSI on the Eloquence CD series. I think this can not be compared since here actual ( if only artificial) discrete surround is produced instead of atempting surround simulation with 2 channels. With a discrete surround track avaylable i strongly asume the DSD 2 channel will be untreated original stereo.
Since everyone here keeps demanding surround at any price there will allways be re-issues using such processes to generate surround sound from recordings made for stereo.
I personally dont believe in this, but as long as it is declared no problem one can simply play the stereo DSD track to get a high resolution copy of the original.

Here's the titles in question:

Verdi: Requiem - Giulini
Wagner: Famous Overtures and Orchestral Works - Böhm/Karajan/Kubelik
Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 - Bernstein
Carl Orff: Carmina Burana - Previn
Mozart: Clarinet, Piano Concertos - Prinz/Gulda/Abbado/Böhm

I was the complainer about ASMI.

DG has used this process to create surround sound tracks for their DVD videos. Again, IMO, the original stereo mixes sound always sound better.

I guess it's a foregone conclusion that DG has not gone back to the master tapes. Seeing that ASMI 'technology' is involved, I'm going to wait to see what people have to say about the discs before buying (I want to get Lenny's 9th -- I have fond memories of the redbook). At least the price is right.

I bought some of the AMSI-treated Eloquence *CDs* a couple of months ago and was dissappointed by most of them. The sound is not spacious but sort of diffuse and therefore unrealistic. I didn't have non-AMSI versions of the recordings to compare them to though.

I think I'll get the Carmina Burana eloquence SACD for a try. The pricing is indeed attractive.

I have the RBCD of this Carmina and its only soso. I much prefer the Telarc SACD (Runnicles) for better sound, better choir singing, livlier interpretation. The Previn recording is a bit uninvolving and has a very bright, almost harsh sound.

Thanks,

I cancelled the order anyway, because the Eloquence SACDs don't have a hirez stereo layer!
