Likely that is because it is the only platform that supports the hacking of SACDs and their very robust copy protection. I cannot think of another reason for the popularity of the older PS3s.

I suspect it has very little to do with SACD compatibility and more to do with the fact that the later models don't have PS2 backwards compatibility and, like the Seventh Taylor says, they run the old firmware that allows you to use your PS3 for loads of things Sony would prefer you didn't.

The 13M, a number tracked by Sony -- one of the two licensors of the format -- mostly consisted of universal DVD/SACD players and home theater systems (i.e. such players integrated with AV receivers) which has a particular popularity in the first half of the previous decade, much less of dedicated SACD players. By that time the flood of SACD players had probably dwindled to a trickle.

Then, in 2006, Sony release PlayStation 3. The first two hardware iterations, about 8M units, supported SACD. That lasted until about late 2007.

Then, from 2010 on, Sony has incorporated SACD into most of their Blu-ray Disc players and home theater systems although by this year it's been elevated to a feature for the higher-end models only. In the US for instance the BDP-S5100 is the only model in the 2013 range with the feature.

It's probably fair to guess there about 25 millions SACD-capable hardware units worldwide but also that the majority of those was not bought specifically because of the SACD feature and that in fact most owners may be entirely unaware of what SACD is and that their unit supports it.

It's a similar situation in the UK: the BDP-S4100 and BDP-S5100 support SACD but the cheaper BDP-S1100 and BDP-S3100 do not.

It is a real shame that Sony didn't push the software side of things when they released all of those SACD compatible Blu-ray machines. I think more people may have been receptive to the multi-channel side of the format now than they were when it first launched.

Also, I wonder how many of those 25 million SACD capable players are still working? Suspect many of the older universal DVD machines have ended up on the scrap heap to be replaced by newer Blu-ray models.

Or gone to live in bedrooms or studies, to be listened to rather than watched perhaps?

Well, would it make sense to pay more for an old PS3 that plays PS2 games than for a newer (used) PS3 plus a used PS2? I haven't done any thorough research on it but suspect the first two generations are priced such that it doesn't make sense to buy them merely for PS2 compatibility.

Also, I have no hard facts here but believe units with Pre-3.55 firmware sell at higher prices than later ones. Whether that's for SACD 'archiving' or some other purpose is anyone's guess.

Can anyone state which models of PS3 exactly will play SACD and old PS2 games? Model and serial numbers would be useful. I keep getting conflicting advice.

Any 20GB or 60GB are both PS2 and SACD compatible.
The PS2 Emotion Engine is built in hardware on these.
Where things get tricky is the 80GB models that have SACD and PS2; only some models do*, and the PS2 compatibility is via emulation only.

All of these are the "fat" models and run loud and hot. Excessive fan noise can be problematic for music/movie enjoyment.
I would be very wary of getting one used now, as these "fats" are dying from YLOD** at an alarming rate. A lot of them have been reflowed*** at least once and are just a problem waiting to happen.

New in box examples of these models fetch ridiculous prices online now.

*These came in the Motorstorm or Metal Gear4 bundles.
** Yellow Light of Death.
*** Resoldering of mother board.

As stated the 60G models have SACD capability if unsure they do carry a tiny SACD logo on the top side (when stood upright ie vertically))amongst all the other decorations etc.

Please google 'PS3 SACD FAQ', as I shall not post the link here.

ETA: Kal already posted it. Thanks.

Bought my 60GB PS3 fat boy on the day of the PS3's release and whilst I never play games on it ( I bought it purely as a Blu ray player initially but have since bought more up to date standalone players since ) it still works as well as the day I bought it. I often play CD's and SACDs via HDMI upscaled to 176.4Khz/24Bit through my system. Given its the most capable version of the PS3 made ( except its inability to bitstream HD surround without PCM conversion ) for me it stands as an amazing peice of hardware which has kept itself up to date. I can think of no other piece of A/V kit that can make that claim and from a SACD point of view it aint half bad either!
