Reviews: Patricia Barber: Nightclub

Performance:   Sonics:
One of the priciest SACDs on the market, "Nightclub" was given the Mobile Fidelity high resolution treatment. Does this mean it is sonically superior to all other SACDs? Not really, although it ranks up there with Telarc for sonic purity. Regarding the performance, this is Patricia Barber at her old-school best, before she adopted the habit of performing strictly her own original material (starting with her most recent album, "Verse", which is not yet available on SACD.) If you preferred the Patricia who gave her own interpretation and attitude to the songs of others, and you enjoy a laid-back, less in-your-face Barber than is heard (and felt!) on discs like Modern Cool, this might be the SACD for you. The title evokes the character of the album, which very much feels like a performance given long after the paying public had filtered out of the club. All in all, a very good effort from engineers, the musicians, and, of course, Patricia Barber herself.

Performance:   Sonics:
music on this disc is quite not that simple but not "crazy" like in Verse and will suite most of the people.

soundwise all her MFSL discs are perfect and great fun listening to.

Performance:   Sonics:
I recently discovered Patricia Barber, via "Modern Cool" and was completely blown away by the outstanding sound quality and the general quality of the songs (both arrangements/ playing and the lyrics). Compared to that, this one was a little bit of a disappointment, but does show another side to this artist, and I can see how some would prefer this title to "Modern Cool"... old standards, tastefully done. Still, I would suggest that newcomers start with "Modern Cool" which contains both originals and a few well-chosen covers. If you prefer the covers, go check out "Nightclub". Sound quality is very good, but perhaps not quite up to the quality achieved on "Modern Cool".

Performance:   Sonics:
It's a very intensive expression of some standard Nightclub-Songs. Every standard song seems to be a Patricia Barber special. A clear, cool voice with a brilliant piano playing and a slow motion music. But it's not boring because there is enough action in the music. I love the high quality of the recordings on my stereo system.

I am not going to discuss the performance here because I absolutely LOVE all Patricia barber's albuma.
Sonically speaking this SACD is (like all the other Patricia Barber SACDs) one of the best SACDs I've ever heard! Absolutely stunning!
