Performance: Sonics: |
One of the priciest SACDs on the market, "Nightclub" was given the Mobile Fidelity high resolution treatment. Does this mean it is sonically superior to all other SACDs? Not really, although it ranks up there with Telarc for sonic purity. Regarding the performance, this is Patricia Barber at her old-school best, before she adopted the habit of performing strictly her own original material (starting with her most recent album, "Verse", which is not yet available on SACD.) If you preferred the Patricia who gave her own interpretation and attitude to the songs of others, and you enjoy a laid-back, less in-your-face Barber than is heard (and felt!) on discs like Modern Cool, this might be the SACD for you. The title evokes the character of the album, which very much feels like a performance given long after the paying public had filtered out of the club. All in all, a very good effort from engineers, the musicians, and, of course, Patricia Barber herself.
