I strongly disagree with Mark P on this. Shostakovich’s Preludes and Fugues for piano solo are one of the most important pieces for the instrument written in the 20th Century. Gilbert Kaplan is the man whose life is Mahler’s second symphony. He is not a trained conductor, just a man who loves his music, or to be precise, who loves his ‘Resurrection’ symphony. Just play the 1st movement of this symphony to your friends if you want to make them envious (BIG time) on your SACD and surround kit. And tell them to pay special attention to silent passages. To impress with loud music is easy, but to record the silence is something completely different.
