I grew up with this record. As a teenager I was immersing myself in all existential crap and thought of Herman Hesse highly. Have nothing much more to add to Paul’s review, this is a beautifully recorded disk and the music is probably well known even to those who don’t listen to classical music on a daily basis. A similar story as with Hahn’s Mendelssohn/Shostakovich disc, so I’ll be short: Brahms fantastic, Stravinsky good, could be better, but still better than Shostakovich.
She seems to be much more comfortable with the romantic repertoire, she can really paint the slow movements, and her virtuosity is ... more |

We got all 3 Hahn’s SACDs quite a while ago, and are still a bit confused and unsure how to rate them. Bach disc (see abowe) was a rather easy one – she is consistent all the way through, like it or not. Hilary Hahn claims that her idol is Nathan Milstein. These performances can’t be further away from his legacy. Where Milstein is deeply personal and authentic, Hahn has no personality whatsoever. Where he is metaphysical and mysterious, she just reads the score. And at what speed!
