Oh my, where do I start??? I guess that I can say that this is one of the most rambunctious recording/performances of the Tchaikovsky 4th Symphony I have ever heard. I am primarily talking about the 4th movement, where I will start my review.

I was more than thrilled when I heard that Telarc was going to re-release this as an SACD!!! I had both of the old redbook CDs as well as one of the Telarc LPs, and when I heard that it was coming out, I jumped for joy!!!

As a LONG term fan of anything Frederick Fennell has ever done (I confess I am a serious band freak, playing trumpet all through school and even through grad school).

Well,
I picked this up today and gave it a serious listen. I was a bit nervous as to the anticipated sound quality, as I hated the sound of Gergiev's Scheherazade with the Kirov.

Over the years I have amassed various recordings of Beethoven symphonies, with Solti, Barenboim, Karajan, etc at the helm. These recordings have come and gone as my redbook library fluctuates. I always liked Karajan's Beethoven (earlier cycles) but as I am not a DG fan, these recordings never stuck ... more |
