Springfield is backed by a crack band that had previously worked with Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, King Curtis and Elvis Presley among others. The musicians - collectively known as the Memphis Cats - include guitarist Reggie Young, bassist Tommy Cogbill, drummer Gene Chrismann, pianist Bobby Wood and Bobby Emmons on organ and electric piano. |

Not only is this one of the truly great albums in popular music.....it also has one of the truly great vocal performances ever done. A true classic that needed to be on sacd.
Over the last several years I have been listening to this album on a remastered cd. The transfer was 24/96 and downconverted. It has great liner notes and the mastering tech mentioned that the tape source is exceedingly hissy. AS a result some noise reduction technology was used. I always wondered if this impacted the sound at all.
Now as I listen to this new sacd mastered by Kevin Gray........I have my answer. While its true that both versions have a similar tonality as both used the same tape source. Thats the only similarity. Other than that.....the improvements are amazing to say the least.
Where to begin...first off.
Dusty's voice is so much more evocative, descriptive and throaty. Now we can hear what she was after. You can hear her strain and all her emotion. What a great performance. The band playing with her are also made so much more clear and cohesive. Instruments are more lifelike and meaty. Whatever technical category one judges music by this sacd (compared to the cd) easily trumps it. Air, clarity, openness and sound stage. Its all here. But Dusty is the star here and its surprising to read that she was extremely self conscious of her voice when you hear whats she did on this album. As I said her performance is historic.
Mostly its the air on this sacd that opens up the sound and makes it so much more lifelike and powerful.
And the tape hiss....the glorious hiss that adds all those additional tiny bits of musical info that cannot.....simply must not be eliminated. And when it is removed you get a veil over the proceedings and some hardness to the sound. Not so on this gorgeous sacd.
Whatever shortcomings there are......are simply those of the recording. There are times where she must have pulled away from the mike but mostly she is recorded perfectly.
Kevin Gray was also responsible for a 45 rpm vinyl record that got great reviews. Its only fitting he did the sacd as well.
Fantastic job Mr. Gray and also in leaving the tape hiss intact. Gray is good...really good at what he does.
Highly recommended and play it loud.

Produced by Jerry Wexler and Arif Mardin and engineered by Tom Dowd, Analogue Productions has literally elevated this classic white soul album out of the ballpark.
The backing band collectively called the Memphis Cats have previously backed Aretha, Wilson Pickett, Elvis and King Curtis and the bite of the horns and the shimmer of the drums have never been properly heard as in this fantastic SACD remastering.
Honestly, it's like hearing it for the first time and one can understand the accolades afforded to Ms Dusty Springfield as one of the great white soul singers of her era.
Very highly recommended!

| Best sounding that I have heard on this title . I have the hdtracks version and it was no better than the CD, maybe worse. The SACD sounds much better, but it may be a little loud. I am very happy with the purchase. The Shelby Lynne tribute sounds great and now this does too. So glad that this has been give the treatment it deserves.
