The Australian composer, Brett Dean, born in 1961, is here honored with three of his compositions. “The Lost Art of Letter Writing” from 2006 and revised in 2007 is a concerto for violin and orchestra in four movements, with the soloist, Frank Peter Zimmermann, backed by the Sydney Symphony that Jonathan Nott leads. The work is inspired by four letters, one per movement. The first is a missive from Johannes Brahms to Clara Schumann dating from 1854 in which he once again declares his love to her. The second letter is signed Van Gogh: “My relations with artists are practically over, without my being capable of explaining how and why it is so. People say all kinds of extravagant and bad things concerning me, which sometimes makes me sad, but on the other hand, it allows my attention to remain concentrated on things that never change, such as the eternal beauty of nature.” The third letter is from Hugo Wolf to his brother-in-law, Josef Strasser, and the fourth is signed Ned Kelly, an outlaw from the 19th century. The program continues with “Testament,” dating from 2002, for twelve violas. The BBC Symphony Orchestra is here under the direction of Martyn Brabbins. “Vexations and Devotions” from 2005 for chorus, large orchestra and electronics is made up of three movements, and aims, according to its author, to be a “sociological cantata” in which the dehumanization of society is confronted. David Robertson directs the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. With creative sense and undeniable inspiration, this SACD is a real musical shock rarely heard in recent and not-so- recent memory in the domain of contemporary music. Pleasure and enthusiasm can be heard from the first not to the last of the works proposed, and it is quite naturally that we broach a sound universe that has retained something that is often lost en route: emotion.
