While we wait for all of their back catalog to be re-released on SACD, Eagle Records was nice enough to release Simple Mind's latest release, "Cry" on SACD. For people who only know the band from "Don't You Forget About Me", this album does not sound anything like that song. I remember in the 80's that they were often compared to U2. While U2 has become a mess, Simple Minds has evolved into a leaner and more dynamic band.
The album kicks off with a great track, "Cry". Any old time Simple Mind fans will notice the difference in style. Not so polished with a hint of the wisdom that only comes from experience. The bouncy "Spaceface" follows with some of the best bass I have heard on a pop SACD. The rest of the tracks build off these two. In particular, "Disconnected", "One Step Closer" and "New Sunshine Morning" grab ahold of you and do not let go. Really, this is so much better than U2's later stuff it is amazing.
The SACD handles the material well. Excellent bass and good channel seperation. However, these sonics are not the gold standard. There is a hint of PCM that I have a hard time explaining but can always hear when present. However, the difference between the SACD and CD layer is very easy to tell. The detail and bass (third time I mentioned that) are just not even close.
If you are looking for a great example that today's music is not all horrible, this is it.
