Performance: Sonics: |
I own the cd 1996 Sony edition that utilized the super bit mapping process. I greatly admire Carole King and her works and this compelled me to buy the sacd version and boy, I'm not disappointed. Carol's voice is clearer and smoother (the cd's a bit harsh and thinner), Charles Larkey's bass is more defined, the string section's wonderful and so JT's vocals and guitar. You can hear the spaciousness of the concert venue and which greatly contributes to the "live feel". There are times when I felt Carol's voice was a bit shot and strained but she sure sang with fervor! I tend to agree that there are several cuts where the mids were a bit loud but maybe MFSL was just being faithful to the original master tape. But this sacd version is clearly superior to the 1996 cd version. To sum up, my purchase of this version is really justified.

Most of us who buy SACDs expect excellent sonics. Not here. There is a glare and nasality to Carole's voice that is very unpleasant. Her backing is mainly a piano that she is playing. Too thin. Try Nina Simone at Town Hall to here what a great live performance can sound like. Still many of these songs are excellent and the music is worth owning.

Carole King's contribution to music is undeniable and this performance is certainly a tribute to her considerable talent. But the overall sound is mediocre; the loud amplification at Carnegie Hall during this concert is obvious and the listener is placed far back from the performance. Carole King's voice is recorded too pronounced and tends to drown out the other two performers. The album didn't really get interesting for me until track 15 when James Taylor arrives.
