I have many concord sacd's and they are all pretty awesome.
I think that this particular sacd might be the very best one however. The recording is pretty amazing in my book but very hard to explain why.
This is modern jazz flavoured music by some amazing musicians. Sometimes modern jazz music tends to alienate listeners but not this time. Slow renditions of songs can be quite intimate and faster songs are very enjoyable to listen to as well. The reason this is modern is the interplay where all the musicians are playing together...seemingly doing their own thing......almost blending together but there is also soloing throughout the entire album.
The recording is fantastic in all regards. The way that the five musicinas seem to blend together in the soundfield but simaltaneously keep their distinct places is amazing. The dynamic range is extremely impressive if also subtle. The sound of all the different instruments is a treat for the listeners ears. This recording is at both homogenized and seperated at the same time. Very impressive recording.
When musicians solo is very impressive. The vibes can be extremely vibrant at times. The drumming which is pushed back......always crackles with life.......and suddenly comes to life in amazing life like presence either when a roll is done or individual hits on the kit. Electric guitar is a feast on the ears too.
Note for distinct note I cannot be more impressed with this sacd. A fabulous recording.
The best way to explain this performance is that the interplay between musicians is phenomenal because it is at both blended and distinct and yet seperated in sound. The listener can feel it so well. There is alot of life on this sacd.
Highly recommended.

With the very the first notes the cool sophisticated rhythms wash over you in glorious Concord sound and you just know this is going to be a great SA-CD. I would regard this music as mainstream and accessable modern jazz. It's melodic and complex at the same time. It sounds more modern than the standards played on Ray Brown's 'Soular Energy' or on another disc I reviewed earlier, Oscar Peterson's Tall Band recorded in the same year (1998).
For those of you not familiar with these players, Gary Burton plays vibraphone, Chick Corea piano, Pat Metheny guitar, Dave Holland bass and Roy Haynes drums. They are all legends that played with Miles, Lester Young or Stan Getz to name but a few. They have solo careers, plus many are composers as well and virtuoso's on their respective instruments often crossing musical bounderies.
Soundwise I would say this is reference quality.

Ever since I was first introduced to the music of Pat Metheny I have been a huge fan. But with the lack of decent information on anything but top 40 artists in the Netherlands I wasn’t to surprised to find yet another title I had never heard of.
Ordering this title I didn’t know what to expect, knowing only the music of Pat Metheny and none of the others one this album (and knowing some of the crap Pat has put out) listening to it for the first time was a bit of surprise.
There are a few Metheny tracks on here I already own in different versions. Which is always interesting to listen to. New interpretations of existing music can give a track a whole new buzz. And indeed it has been a buzz listening to those tracks, not to say the rest of the disc isn’t impressive. But those were a little harder to get into.
Sound quality wise there is a lot of good things to say about this album. It’s clearly well recorded. But the presentation of especially the guitar work is not what I had hoped for. Unlike the Metheny solo and Metheny group stuff the guitar doesn’t take centre stage on this one. And for me that’s bad news. Because I like the guitar sound to jump out at me when listening to one of my favorite guitar players.
Others will probably won’t see this as a problem and may even prefer this approach.
All in all a disc I can recommend but not as much as I hoped when ordering.
