Performance:   Sonics:
My first ever Chick Corea album, and it is a double-sacd with live performances
from a row of shows in New York, to celebrate his 60th birthday.
This is a Hybrid SACD, with CD, Stereo-SACD and 5.1 tracks.

This if sort of a "best of live". Corea has done many different things over the years,
from Miles to classical, a la Herbie Hancock has done.
These CD's feature a lot of people with whom Corea has worked with over the
years. This is modern jazz with a focus on the piano (some of the tracks feature
only piano and vocal or 2 pianos). The performances are blistering and
well worth your while. The sonics are even more blistering, recorded direct to
DSD, and on the 5.1 track it is like being there yourself, with the club atmosphere
in the rear and the performances up on stage, in front of you with lots of
space between the performers.

Fantastic! Recommended!

Performance:   Sonics:
I am familiar with Chick Corea only by reputation, but this SACD is wonderful. Most improvisational jazz requires careful listening and some effort to immerse yourself in the musical flow. I connected immediately and almost effortlessly with several of these tracks. The sequence that begins with track four, "Matrix", extending through track six,"Crystal Silence", his classic duet with vibist Gary Burton, is particularly beguiling.

In the liner notes, Chick states how much he enjoyed reuniting with all his musical friends for this occasion. It shows. Not often do you hear musicians so enjoying the moment and letting the music breathe so freely. This stuff draws you into the experience - you don't have to get your ears in a knot to enjoy it.

What else? Recording quality/mix is superb, capturing the ambience of the club (Blue Note I think) and the chemistry of the musicians. Great job miking the acoustic bass! I liked the way some of the instruments are sometimes extended front to back on the sides of the listening area - nice touch. "Rendevous" will be spending a lot of time in my CD player.

Brilliant, a bit like the Koln concert in vibe but faster and livlier. Sonics are brilliant though, I'm listening to it now again for the 10th time after 5 years... just keep pulling it off every now and then to hear it again. I think that says something.

Daniel.
