Try the autocalibration before getting too depressed!

That's true, but be prepared for the worst.

I have a Sony DVP 9000 ES and noticed that it skipped a lot on disc 2 of the new Julia Fischer unaccompanied Bach set. I thought the disc was defective but then it played perfectly later.

Yesterday I opened the Pentatone recording of the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra playing music by Britten, Bartok and Hartmann. I loaded it and noted it took a little longer to display the number of bands and total playing time.

Then when I push 'PLAY' ,the display flashes C 13 00 and there is no sound.

The CD layer plays OK.

My new Wagner disc Kreizburg also on Pentatone plays perfectly, as do rented DVDs my wife just brought home.

Any idea what is going on and what I can do about it?

Thanks,

I have a similar problem with my Sony DVP NS900 (3.5 years old).

Some hybrids will only play the CD layer, sometimes after re-inserting the disc a couple of time it will select the SACD layer, and sometimes the infamous C 13 00 message appears.
These discs played fine until a couple of weeks ago, including one of my favorites: Steely Dan - Gaucho.

SACD only discs play ok, also no problems with DVD's.

Tried the service menu, but it lists no SACD (it lists LCD??)

No no luck yet solving this with the tweaks that were suggested.

Perhaps the lens needs cleaning? I found a "DIY guide" but am hesitant to try this at home:

http://sslabs.homestead.com/C555ES_SACD_CLEAN_2.html
http://sslabs.homestead.com/C555ES_SACD_Lens_3.html

Perhaps I should have it serviced.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Niels

I too have a tempermental Sony machine. It misbehaves in August, which is a humid month here, within sight of an arm of the Atlantic. I suspect that November in Amsterdam is gray and damp, no? Who knows what happens between the laser lens and a rapidly spinning platter, when the air is saturated? My guess is FOG.

I thought about that as well, but we run central heating which actually makes the inside climate dry. And it doesn’t explain why certain hybrid discs have no problem at all.
And yes Amsterdam is foggy, cold and wet this time of year....

Hi,

My sacd had the same problem. It didn't play any hybrid-sacd's any more. They were just scanned and played as normal cd's.

I followed the advice mentioned earlier to 'clean your dvd lens'.

Therefor i bought a general multimedia lens cleaner cd-rom. It had 10 'brushes' on it.

The cleaning worked GREAT for me. As a result, ALL hybrid-sacd's played in multichannel mode again.

My sacd player is: DVP-NS705V

I ADVISE EVERYONE TO TRY THE SAME, if you are having this kind of problems with your hybrid-sacd's.

Thanks guys,
Martijn

Hi, I have this SACD player, which shows some of the problems mentioned. Would you mind sharing the calibration method?
Thanks.

Many apologies, Zen, for not getting back to you earlier. Did you manage to get the calibration instructions for your XB940? If not, drop me an e-mail at johnm@paradise.net.nz and I'll send you the file as an attachment.

I have to say that, while it did work, it was overall just a temporary solution and I ended up getting a new laser assembly fitted. I haven't had a moment's problem with either SACDs or CDs since then.

Hello guys
I want to share with you my experience with one Sony NS 900V SACD/CD player I have. I got the same problem, some hybrid SACD did not play because it only read the CD layer. I took to me several hours searching this problem but finally found a solution. First you need to enter in service menu. All internet pages that I found for this say that the key sequence is [TITLE][CLEAN][POWER] but I DO NOT HAVE TITLE button in my remote. Solved situation: instead of TITLE you can use the [5] key in the remote so the correct key sequence is [5][CLEAN][POWER].
After that, you should enter to the service menu (you must have a tv monitor running). Select RETURN for the first screen and then main menu will appear. Select 1 (Drive auto adjustement) and the option 2 (CD). It does not care that there is no SACD menu option, the CD option will fix the problem. After that, system will ask you to insert a simple 12cm CD disc. Once it read this one, system will adjust all CD process. When it finished, you could try again for you hybrid SACD.

It worked for me

Regards
