This is as superb transfer of a great recording. Don't know the LPs but the CD was good. This is better. The percussion is even more realistic. The two tracks from the 1956 sessions have been transformed.I had always thought them a bit long in the tooth. Not now.

The last notes of track 14 fade out with a very strange electronic ring/buzz on my system. I hear this on all three tracks: SACD Mch, SACD stereo, and CD. Is this part of the performance, a recording blooper, or a fault of my system?

My copy seems OK but that might be more to the limitations of my system than anything else

Now I have tried track 14 on my other player, with headphones, and the strange sound is still there. It must be in the recording.

It is on the original tapes. Track 13 is also has it. Both tracks are the oldest on the disc and were recorded in 1956. Most of the rest date from sessions in 1958.

The Mercury Living Presence SACD series uses the old CD mastering from the early 90's on the CD layer.

So if you hear a problem on both the SACD and CD layer, it is most likely on the tapes, as it seems improbable that the same transfer/mastering error would have occured during the CD mastering in the 90's and the SACD mastering years later.

Just listened to this again, and I have to say I really enjoy this release. Maybe because of "Sleigh Ride", I tend to listen to this during the winter.

I own all three of the LP's, but I have to say that they did a pretty good job doing the transfers. It does sound a bit "dry" in the strings, but the fun of the music always gets to me; and listening to it in three channel is an experience you cannot get from the vinyl.

It's too bad these Mercury releases were stopped. It would be great for Pentatone to pick them up like they did with the Philips catalogue.

I suggested this on the Pentatone thread, but there was no response. The Mercury team worked for Philips after Mercury was acquired, making such records as the Richter/Kondrashin Liszt Concertos disc in 3-channel.

There is always the chance that Acoustic Sounds will license and reissue these recordings, which are very popular among American audiophiles. Like they do now with the Living Stereo albums. To be sold at a much higher price that the original SACDs of course.
