Wow! This disc contains some of the most jaw-dropping displays of technique and fiery temperament that I have heard in a long time. I agree with Polly Nomial's review: this is not a disc for the purist! Her frequent tempo changes might seem capricious to some, but for me, it seems as if she's making up the music on the spot--I imagine that Liszt would approve! I'm not sure how well her spontaneity will wear for the long haul, but for sheer pianistic thrills, it's hard to beat.

Well, I just read a rather scarifyingly dismissive review over at Allmusic, the gist of which was that the artist is mannered and much less convincing in the slower, more introspective passages in the Liszt. Anyone care to comment? (Perhaps this just comes with the territory, when the interpretation is somewhat unorthodox, as I understand is the case here.)

It doesn't appeal to me at all taking on board all that has been said here.

And the Avanti DSD recording is on par with Leschenko's artistry. Actually, Avanti's solo piano and chamber recordings are currently some of the best sounding in the SACD catalog.

Her earlier Prokofiev disc was recorded in DXD. This one doesn't say so, but the piano sound is some of the most truthful I have ever heard!

Perhaps avanticlassic can enlighten us about this!

Chalk it up to a differing opinion...and you know the old expression about those, right? :-) She emphasizes different voices than some pianists do, and she plays some bits faster and more aggressively than others do...it's called interpretation! I think Lukas Foss once said, "Music would sound terrible if we played it exactly the way it was written." She's very much a Romantic player. Some may prefer a less overtly "interpreted" performance ala Alfred Brendel. To each his own. (Besides, this is the only negative review of this SACD that I have read.)

You guys pretty much convince me to order this SACD.

According to a Fanfare reviewer currently there are 178 recordings of the B-minor sonata and more are coming, This is a favorite of mine and despite fifteen recordings in my collection I am still on the lookout for that definitive version. Mine include, at the bottom, an all out boring Brandel to a superb Lazar Berman LP on Columbia/CBS, the one that I am eagerly waiting/hoping for is a recording by Arcadi Volodos, do not know if there are plans to do a recording by this pianist but he has been performing this work all over Europe with great acclaim, so there is hope.

Brandel? Do you perhaps mean Brendel? If so, I would say that his B-minor Sonata (Philips 1981) is probably my favourite version.

As for SACD versions, of the two that I have on SACD:

Yundi LI: Liszt: Piano Works - Yundi Li
Claudio Arrau: Liszt: Piano Works - Arrau

... I think the Yundi Li is far superior. It is also of interest as the only pure DSD recording released by Deutsche Grammaphon, as far as I know.
