I'm a semi-retired banker/lawyer/preacher. More relevantly I'm a passionate lover of great music, live and recorded. Multi-channel sacd gets me closer to the experience of live music than any previous technology at a fraction of the cost of the "high end" stereo gear (cd and lp based) that now sits mostly idle in the guestroom. I've been listening to concerts, recitals, and opera live for 50 years and at various times the New York Philharmonic under Bernstein, the Chicago Symphony under Solti, and the Philadelphia Orchestra from Muti onward have been my "hometown" bands.

Fagerlund: Violin concerto, Ignite - Kuusisto, Lintu        (10 of 10 found this review helpful)
  July 28, 2015

Since none of our more musically knowledgeable folks has submitted a review of this outstanding disc I'll take the bit between my teeth and try not to embarrass myself or Mr. Fagerlund. In order to set the stage for my own comments and because I lack the musicological language necessary to describe ... more
Blake: Wind concertos - Andrew & Neville Marriner, Martin, Nunez, ASMF        (8 of 9 found this review helpful)
  November 15, 2013

This recording certainly must be the first to owe its existence to the fortuitous circumstance of composer, conductor, and soloist patronizing the same hairdresser. Howard Blake may be famous in Britain due to the Snowman, whether animated or courtesy of Sadler's Wells, but he's not exactly a ... more
Carol Kidd: Tell Me Once Again        (2 of 3 found this review helpful)
  June 16, 2011

I might as well say from the start that I listen to very little "popular" music. When I do it's because the singer chooses songs that tell stories, which is exactly what comprises this superlative disc. Every single song on this disc is a story of its own; of life, or love, of hope, or loss, and ... more
Mendelssohn: Concerto for Violin, Piano and Orchestra - Wolters        (3 of 5 found this review helpful)
  May 3, 2011

I've had this disc in my collection for at least two years, listened to it a couple of times, and thought no more about it. Last night, in the mood for some Mendelssohn, I popped it in the player and was blown away. It's customary to express amazement at Mendelssohn's precocity when discussing his ... more
Bach: Cantatas Vol. 46 - Suzuki        (7 of 9 found this review helpful)
  November 9, 2010

From time to time I have mentioned my admiration for Maestro Suzuki's recordings for BIS, particularly singling out the Cantata series. In doing so I've acknowledged that I share the Lutheran spiritual tradition with both JSB and Suzuki, and that I find the devotional quality of these performances ... more

Multi-channel SACDs from Exton
November 27, 2015
"Passable" is the perfect description. In my experience the best of a pretty mediocre lot are the Macal CPO Dvorak discs, probably because the highly reverberant Rudolfinum tends to offset Exton's typical very dry mc approach. It's a shame that their Pittsburgh recordings are stereo only since I believe those we're engineered by Sound Mirror. ... more

What To Record?

The Ticciati disc is a stunner, too bad two of the three symphonies are among those already on sacd. I'll certainly be among the first in line for any others he chooses to record. And thank you, David, for contacting Ars, although considering the pace of releases in the London set, Paris might take another two years. Since the Paris set was ... more
What To Record?
October 25, 2015
For multichannel listeners the premise is obviously correct, at least until saturation point has been reached. Since many of us are "collectors" the saturation point with Beethoven or Mahler symphonies may be pretty high. The thing that frustrates me is how much repertoire remains unavailable on sacd. For pete's sake we have way fewer than half the ... more
