hi,

i'm owning a philips DVP720SA DVD-Player with SACD-Support.. i bought 2 SACDs yet, "El Cielo" of Dredg and TDS of NIN. They are a real pleasure.. but i heard that these are no "real" SACDs as they were not recorded with DSD. So now, as i like this music also, i'm searching for a really good piece of classical music. It should be orchestral and the composition should be very intensive. I don't know much about componists, but it should be really intensive.. and the mix should be full 5.1, not 5.0 as i saw here really often.

What are your all-time-favourites in that way?

I suggest you try the Mahler third symphony from Chailly on Decca, 470 652-2.

...yep, or any of the Tilson Thomas Mahler recordings - perhaps the Resurrection (No. 2)?

All the MTT are 5.0 and, for some reason, this guy has to have 5.1.

seems to me it's more about fun and experiencing all the format can do (technically). since 5.1 comes from motion picture sound, why not look for some bombastic sound track recording, maybe even with effects like Telarc often did on RBCD, the may have some on SA-CD as well.

If you want to know what are DSD recordings, you can find a link "DSD recordings" at the bottem of each page of this site.

Best,Pentaman

P.S. all PentaTone new recordings are done in DSD and all PentaTone re-issues in the RQR-series are DSD remastered analogue recordings

On the SACD box it states that a 5 channel playback system is required so I presume it is the same as Telarc's usual classical recordings and does not use the specific subwoofer.1 channel.

Many, if not most, Telarc multichannel classical SACDs have .1 channel and I think Rosza disc has .1 too if I remember correctly. Separate subwoofer channel (at least in Telarc's case) doesn't take anything off from other 5 (or 4) channels, it just contains low freq sounds from other channels. If you don't have full range speakers, this comes handy because you don't need to do bass management in your player or receiver and therefore you can avoid the possible loss in sound quality. You can just set your subwoofer's frequency level to match your speakers' output.
