This is a superb release both with the pianism of Mr Gerstein and the recording which is one of the best I have heard. Would be good for Messrs Gergiev and Matsuev to hear after the mess of their recent Prokofiev recording.
Puccini: Turandot - Mehta      (10 of 11 found this review helpful)

It is frequently said that amongst Decca’s great recordings its operas represent “jewels”. If so this 1972 recording of Turandot would have to be a “crown jewel.” It has been continually in print since its 1973 release, sales enhanced by Nessun Dorma’s chart success when it became the signature ... more

I don't know about 2 channel, ruxtonet, but in MC it lives up to TAS's review. One of Michael Bishop's best.A great alternative to the 2 discs set on Pentatone.
Vintage Cinema - Erich Kunzel          (2 of 2 found this review helpful)

This collection of appropiately named vintage film scores was not recorded by the usual Telarc team with Michael Bishop in charge of recording.( Is this a sign of things to come after the recent announcement?) A new name to me of Robert Friedrich was in charge of the recording which was made in one ... more

Could not agree less than with the above comment from swestbom.A beautiful performance and recording fully deserving of the accolades it has won.If you experience any distortion then you should look at your playback equipment. The recording is nigh on perfect-close to provide impact but with plenty ... more

Looks like a one off. Recording similar to the other releases. Taken from live performances, sound is close up-front row-so little by way of front to back depth. However very dynamic with great presence and detail. Highly recommended both for performance and recording. Only one play thru so far but I think this disc will take up residence in my ... more

A bit hasty given Honeck's track record with his earlier releases of Dvorak and Strauss. Since Kleiber's classic Vienna recording I don't think any conductor has been game enough to record and couple these two together. My copy arrived today and am looking forward to hearing it. Copious notes too. ... more
Rachmaninov: Symphony No. 3 (London Symphony Orchestra, Valery Gergiev, LSO Live)
October 5, 2015
I have always had a soft spot for this which is regarded generally as his finest symphony. Given that it was composed late in Rachmaninov's career, I found this new recording very true in the wistful and nostalgic feel that Gergiev gives it. Sound is very good in surround especial from this troublesome venue. The BIS never convinced me in the ... more
