'Ow queer! This Esoteric is due for release at almost the same time as DG Japan's single layer SACD at 4500 yen.

Which presents a conundrum and an expensive opportunity to compare transfers. No doubt DG will go the 96/24 PCM route to DSD but isn't that exactly what Esoteric do anyway?

Wouldn't it have been nice if one or the other had gone the DSD direct route - what a comparison that would have made although potentially embarrassing for one of the companies.

I await subjective opinions on both discs with great anticipation. Meanwhile the Esoteric has made it to my Wish List but the DG version has not

I'm not in the income bracket to buy both - actually, not even the single layer on its own. A comparison would be interesting, though my guess is if listening to the music rather than the sound differences would be difficult for me to discern.

This is a highly-rated performance I'm sorry to say I've never heard.

Is there a reviewer on the site we all trust? Perhaps we can all chip in and buy a copy of each to be sent to him/her to compare: would be interesting and useful for the future.

Pity they didn't choose KB's Brahms 2 from his later VPO cycle, that is wonderful.

I recently listened to that Bohm cycle. When I read your post, I immediately listened to the 2nd again (literally just finished it a moment ago). It's enjoyable, but way too light ("easy listening") for my taste. I much rather see an sacd release of Bruno Walter's 1960 recording with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra.

You'd think they'd include another one of the symphonies, or at least an overture...

I own both versions, Esoteric and SHM DG SACD. To my ears, the shm sacd sounds better than the Esoteric, more analogical. Alas, the price of these shm sacd is too high.
