This is not the volcanic performance of the Rite I was hoping for. Extra bass can't make up for a lack of brutality. The percussionist (actually, I think there should be two of them, but I'll treat them as one) is a great disappointment. He's almost dainty. Yes, the bass is deep, yes it's loud. But ... more |

A superbly recorded Mahler 5th. Unfortunately, after a great start, the performance peters out. The orchestra cannot be faulted, as they play with consummate skill throughout. It is Jansons who fails to sustain vitality and cohesion through to the end. You might prefer this release to Jonathan ... more |

| After making a definitive statement, I go back and listen to the recording I made the statement about with a more critical ear and often come away with a different conclusion. Happens again and again. I just listened to the Mackerras Brahms 2nd, this time more critically, and ended up disliking it. (Yet just yesterday it was heavenly!) Months ago ... more |

| After switching to an apple computer, iTunes got me downloading music for convenience' sake, but music just doesn't sound as good. Definitely give SACD a try. There are just too many classic recordings that aren't available on SACD yet (or cost an arm and a leg) otherwise I would do all my listening on SACD. ... more |
