I suppose some will dismiss me as an old prude but so far we have not allowed expletive language to contaminate our thoughts or writings on this forum. I am certain many members take a similar view to me that it is not a trend that should be encouraged either.

May I on behalf of all those that agree, ask those that now see fit to introduce expletives very politely to DESIST from doing so on here (culprits will know who they are). Most of us have a sufficiently wide vocabulary to avoid the need for such childish excursions. Expletives may well have a place in intellectual debate but I have yet to come across a situation where their use is anything other than distracting or unhelpful to a debate.

It is evident that SA-CD.net is taken very seriously in recorded music circles these days as evidenced by the large number of influential people who contribute regularly and reviews having been quoted in Gramophone and other journals. Such accolades have been hard won and are a sign of respect for its values and contribution to the recorded arts.

All of this will be jeopardised if there is any hint that the site has been hijacked by mindless idiots who love drawing attention to themselves through cheap juvenile invective.

It is not my intention to be the site gatekeeper but Please Stop It...

I agree.

Let me first say that I have nothing, personally, against swearing. I am fluent in Cantonese, Australian and even English swearing, and do so when necessary and appropriate. So I am certainly no prude.

But there is a time and place for everything. And this Forum just isn't it.

Certain folk on this Forum seem to increasingly regard mindless abuse as a proper substitute for reasoned debate. For me, however, this behaviour shows minds that are bereft of wit, wisdom and consideration for other viewpoints.

More seriously, this trend seems to be increasing since I became active in this Forum a year ago. If you read meany threads, they are dominated by ad hominem attacks and general rudeness. This cheapens debate and very rapidly becomes boring.

As an example, I challenge folk to consider the Vanska/Sibelius thread. For its first four pages or so, it seemed to address the music and the actual recording. It then degenerated into a doctrinal fist-fight about whether or not deep bass existed, who could hear it, who had crappy ears and/or equipment and so on. This lasted 20 pages or so, going around in circles, getting precisely nowhere but generating an inordinate amount of hot air and anger.

If that were not enough, it then degenerated further in its later postings into a ranting abuse-laden mud-throwing match about who started WWII, existential guilt and out-and-out racism.

Not very much to do with SACDs, Sibelius, music or - indeed - anything at all. And all this despite reasoned and repeated attempts from Bissie, myself and others to calm things down and get back on thread.

This thread, regretfully, is far from unique. If one regards the Litton/Stravinsky thread, you can see the same thing now happening before your eyes. Another thread hijacked by just a very few yahoos, in fact.

Honestly, outsiders reading these posts must think we're a bunch of raving baboons. Unfortunately, in just a few cases, they might be right.

So, CUT IT OUT. Let's behave like civilised people and get back to the music, shall we?

I agree completely. I have never liked swearing, it cheapens any conversation and makes me uncomfortable. I never swear in my personal life and resent people who do so on the internet.

C'mom, again? Just see /showthread/68153/.

Anyway, as I pointed out in a previous post, "freedom of speech will always incur in divergent opinions and occasionally overheated debates over tangential subjects (guilty as charged). It's exactly this free-range and hands-free approach that keeps this forum lively and interesting.

For a strict code of conduct, there are plenty of websites in countries like Iran and Venezuela, while for self-censorship, we can count on our major news organizations. But for a little bit of musical anarchy, there's only SA-CD.net..."

Just because an argument has been raised before doesn't invalidate it.

Moreover, and more significantly, freedom is a two-way street; as well as empowering, it asks of citizens that they behave responsibly and reasonably.

In other words, 'freedom' is not at all the same as a 'free-for-all'.

The question in respect of verbal freedom, where does one draw the line?Homophobia, sexism, race-hate, flag-burning, religious incitment? But surely a line does need to be drawn, somewhere, sometimes.

Freedom does not give you a free license to do whatever you like. Otherwise, we'd be murdering each other in the streets, bankers would rip-off and then insult the population, politicians would lie and distort constantly, and we would be bombing other countries whenever we felt like it.

Erm....

If the swearing continues, can we bomb them?

If the swearing continues we should at least embed a "parental advisory, explicit content" logo somewhere on the website to warn the visitors ;-)

If you use that logo it will attract people in the same way as it raised sales of cd.

Expletives say more about the poster than what they're trying to express.
