In the meantime, it's already available as a 192/24 download (albeit in stereo only) directly from Channel....

And sounds pretty impressive that way too.
And the playing and performance is superb too

What a beautiful sumptuous MCH recording! One of the best I've heard. Sorry Stephen, I could no longer wait for the US distributor, so I ordered directly from Channel.

The image is technically perfect. The Sonoma metering shows an equal balance across the three front channels, and it sounds like it. No gaps, no combing, and the image extends well beyond the front speakers, fading naturally to the rears. The center image is stable and solid. This is what ITU multi-channel is all about, IMO. Highly recommended!

Tom

Like Tom, I couldn't wait and I got mine from CC direct. It just arrived, and It hasn't been out of the Marantz since. Both the MC and Stereo mixes are wonderful, although I primarily listen MC. But the best part: What a fabulous performance this is! I have Szell, Kripps, and Walter in this work--all older analog, but wonderful, differing versions. I've said it before, but Ivan Fischer seems to be able to make me hear something totally new in well-worn works without ever resorting to heavily mannered rendition. I love this recording. Like Fischer's Mahler 4, this is a very magical performance! It's THAT good. Don't hesitate.

As Peter's link shows, it's an alignment of five surround channels, and the link shows the playback speakers. The idea is IF the primary five microphones used in the session are placed in the same alignment, and at the same volume level, the resulting surround image is a continuous stable, non combing, faithful spatial reproduction of the sound of the ensemble, in that hall. Unfortunately, IMO, that doesn't happen so much, particularly with large orchestra recordings.

No recording is made to a formula. It's made and adjusted by the experience and ears of the producer and balance engineer. And further adjusted again by the producer and mastering engineer. All for very practical reasons. The hall is the biggest problem. It may not well compliment a perfect surround ITU microphone alignment. A moderate size shoebox shape works best. And the spacing and position of the front left and right microphones for ITU surround are not the ideal positions for a stereo mix. Compromises are needed if separate stereo mic channels are not available during recording.

Erdo Groot, now of Polyhymnia, but originally of Philips, did much of the classical music pioneering work using ITU:

(Quit talking, and start recording! - Silence is golden)

I deeply respect his contributions to the recording art, and all the others, like Jared and Hein Dekker, who continue and further the advance of acoustic surround recording.

A very fine review for this in the Independent:

Also a very positive review from David Hurwitz, although he gives it a 9-9 because of the shortness of the last note, and because he feels that the timpani are lacking impact in the MC mix.

I've been living with this recording for a few weeks now, and I can say that it is magical.

More than a little credit must go to the Channel Classics team who seem to have the happy knack of producing recordings that excel time-after-time. Whilst one can now RELY on Ivan Fischer to deliver the performance goods, they still have to be turned into a product worthy in every way of the performance; with Ivan's band of Magnificent Magyars setting an ever higher bar with each new venture, that challenge cannot be anything less than a nightmare for the recording team. That they rise to and meet this challenge every time is worthy of note.

When thinking of Ivan & Channel Classics one is bound to be reminded of the words of that famous old Blue Eyes song

"Love and Marriage (Ivan and Jared),
Go together like a Horse and Carriage etc"
