After seeing your rig Ernani71, I'd suggest the following:

If you are looking for a true upgrade, and you actually like the presentation headphones deliver, why not move up the ladder a bit. For a little more than what the BDP-95 should sell for, you could get the Sennheiser HD800 headphones or a used Stax rig.

As much as I look forward to the new BDP-95, HD800 was the best audio component I purchased in recent years. Be forewarned though, HD800 has a quite different sound signature. If you like mellow, warm, punchy sound, stay with your HD650. If you cherish neutrality, great microdynamics and transients, huge "headstage" with excellent instrument localization, but still wrapped in the general Sennheiser's sound signature, HD800 could be your ticket.

Drop me an e-mail, if you are interested. I've been listening to both headphones for many years.

That's a great shout Karlosak.

I've demoed the HD800 up against the top STAX and although each is unique in presentation, they are both a musical revelation and I agree they would transform many people's listening.

If you like 'phones, either offers SO much more than vastly more expensive speakers.

I heard the HD800 with a Lehmann Black Cube h/p amp but I'm considering getting a pair to use with my Nagra PLP tube preamp...

On the contrary! Good headphones have many advantages over speakers. They're usually more detailed and don't smudge the sound like a listening room does.

Headphones have their advantages, but there's nothing like feeling the music with your entire body. I notice this when I listen to music in my car. It's one of the things I miss with headphones. But I'm glad to hear that at least two people believe upgrading is still worth it.

I've been eyeing the HD800 ever since I saw that zeus owns one. But the price difference over the 650 is almost a thousand dollars, and I couldn't justify the upgrade . . . until you mentioned the "headstage." The soundstage on the 650 strikes me as perfect for chamber music and rock, but for full scale symphonic music it seems a bit narrow, as if the orchestra were being pushed in from the sides. I thought this might improve if I got a better amp or player, but I'm beginning to think that the 800 will be what will solve that particular problem. I also hope they're more comfortable than the 650. Thanks for the tip.

As for the Stax: Are electrostatic phones really that much better? I saw at least two different styles, one with rectangular earcups that looked very ugly to me. Ever wear one of those? The Senns are the ones I will probably end up buying.

I am seriously considering it too,as my last digital disc player.
It would serve mainly as a backup for my SCD-2 but also for future surround sound, and Blu ray and it seems even capabilitly to play hi res files up to 24/192.
Sounds like quite a machine to me.
Some producers/recording engineers are actually using OPPO players at home.
Regarding the HD 800 headphones, if you can afford them, or a similar upgrade from the HD 650 go for them, I am pretty sure you won't regret it.
