Discussion: Mahler: Symphony No. 2 - Jansons

Hello

Nobody talk of this release, even if I know Mahler is often recorded... but Concertgebouw/Jansons/RCO is among the top quality in SACD (IMHO)!

I received it today.
The package is a digipack with 2 SACDs and a DVD, well made.
It is a 96 Khz recording for those who listen the notes in place of the disc.

The surprise for me is the DVD (but perhaps I'm not enough curious). I thought it was some ordinary bonus but is ALL the concert is filmed in a good DVD quality (of course it's not a blu-ray). For the sound, we have a choice between stereo or surround sound. I'm not at home and I test it only on stereo on a computer.
I don't know what king of sound it is (PCM, DTS ... ?) I'll try it saturday in multichannel on my system, but really good surprise !

Saturday, I'll try to read the DVD on my Sony for the picture and the SACD on my Oppo for the sound :-)). It will be very surprising if it is synchro !

In the notes, it is said that Bernarda Fink record with CGO in Mahler 3/Jansons (RCO 10004) so we can hope to have the same thing soon for the third of Mahler ! (hope the 8 too !).

Regards.

The SACD consists of an edited version of several concerts while the DVD is a single performance.

You're right, SACD has been recorded on three concerts on 3,4 and 6 december 2009 (by Polyhymnia).

This is one mighty expensive disc according to Amazon pricing even if there are 2 discs in the package, which is the norm for 'Resurrection' anyway. Don't recall the MTT/SFSF version being that much even with all it's much superior design presentation.

Ouch!

Any North American crazy enough to buy this at the Amazon price deserves to be fleeced. It's currently $25 at MDT, which even with shipping from the UK and bank service charges works out to about $30 total.

The Amazon.com current price is their statement of the old pork chop joke in reverse. It's not yet released in the US, and the price is a fairy tale. Once released it will be in the twenty something dollar range, and the associated Amazon sellers, well below that.

The Dvorák Requiem is a very recent two SACD release, and is $27.70 on Amazon, and $24.37 new with associated Amazon sellers.
