Pittsburg? Pittsburgh! This is why this recording doesn't show up when I search for "Pittsburgh"
btw,
Here's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's concert review on 'Symphonie fantastique'.
"PSO's ghoulish Halloween concert is scary good" http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/09304/1009780-388.stm

I think this has the best cover art of any Pentatone release :)

A really good DSD version has been long awaited. As things stand Davis' RCO version on re-mastered Quad is about the best sounding out there and far better than the old CD on Philips but inevitably suffered from earlier recording limitations.

The Jarvi/Telarc has good sonics but the performance is very average bordering on boring. This work should never sound boring.

Jarvi's "Marche to the Scaffold" is perhaps the most exciting version I have ever heard out of perhaps 50 or so I have owned in the past 40 years. And "Dream of the Witches' Sabbath" is simply to die for. IMHO not only the finest sound quality but best performance ever. I do however find the Love Scene from "Romeo et Juliette" a real bore and wish he had chosen a different coupling. Perhaps if you tried listening to the "Symphonie fantastique" only and skip Love Scene from "Romeo et Juliette" you might enjoy this SACD more?

And that is coming from someone who used to say "music is Love?"
Berlioz's Romeo and Juliet Love scene boring?
With the BSO and Munch it sounds on par with Wagner's Tristan and Isolde and a prime example of love and passion ideally translated to music to me.
Taken as a whole, the piece is a bit uneven and may not be one of Berlioz's absolutely best works, but that tune!
Simply one of the most gorgeously beautiful and passionate tunes ever composed if you ask me.
All the best Chris

I enjoy it too, although there is room for a better one. In the waltz, Järvi unusually uses the version with the cornet part which Berlioz added later - this is brilliantly played and adds sparkle to the lilting waltz, although some folk avoid this as too fussy. John
