I know there are lots of new pop ones coming out. Are there also more Universal Classical Shm-SACDs on the way??? I've had some gem successes in the series ... so would be willing to try some others that tickled my fancy, so to speak ... even if they are pricey.

There are many single layer SACDs. SACD-SHM is also single layer so that cannot be the distinguishing feature. SHM is characterized typically by three things super hard material refers to the chemical composition of the plastic which is derived from technology used in LCD displays. This is supposed to be more transparent to the laser wavelength of sacd disc readers with more optical purity/consistency. Secondly during the making of the glass master to stamp the metal discs the clocking of the device that makes the pits has been enhanced by using rubidium atomic clocks to modulate the cutting of the glass master. Thirdly SHM discs have a specific green colour. This is supposed to reduce light scatter and absorb red spectra of the laser.

SHM material can also be used in rbcd hence SHM-CD. Some HYbrid SACD discs also have the green coating. There may be SHM discs not using atomic clocks.

There are many ways to compare SACD vs SACD-SHM. Universal released a with without sampler early on Welcome to the top of the World SA-CD SHM Sampler: Welcome to the Top of the World . Some hybrids have been reissued in SHM format by both EMI and Universal.

Most audiophiles feel there is a small but worthwhile audio benefit to SHM. SACD or SACD-SHM is not superior to playback of master source files.

So, were these additional titles already slated to be released before the announcement by Universal Japan? ( btw, I read the announcement off of DVD-A.net)

'Can't wait for the Supertramp title, but I think, I'll buy it for 40% less as a "pure audio" blu ray disc at Music Direct here in Chicago.

I haven't heard any announcement from Universal Japan. These dates were known for over 2 months.

I have Breakfast in America in both format and SHM-SACD is way better than HFPA. Blu ray is not from the original Master.

So, does this automatically mean that a SHM-SACD or single layer SACD
is going to have a sonic "edge" over the same HD files on a Hybrid SACD?

In a sense, yes. Single-layer SACDs should have a soundstage that's more stable, well-defined, and firm, with silvery violins, flutes, and vocals, whereas a hybrid SACD with the exact same data on it (plus the RBCD layer) should sound more transparent, more airy, and a bit more fluid, with a greater degree of golden glow and "sheen" on high notes and percussion instruments like cymbals. So it really depends on your tastes -- neither really has an "edge" over the other.

And the stage depth of the aural image depends on what kind of engine the delivery van has, gasoline or diesel.

Is that, perchance, the sound of Disbeliever, Jr. cackling in the mist?

Change the oil AmonRa or remove the sludge from your ears.............

SHM~SACD rules!

Where's the 'gas' in gasoline. We say petrol! Elephants have trunks. We say 'boot' - it's where we keep our boots for walking!

You do realize it won't be the same mastering, right?

Very well expressed.
