I have spent the last few hours unsuccessfully searching the net for instructions on how to open the tray of a super jewel box to insert/remove the tray insert artwork.

I started trying to lift the left edge, but I did not want to break the tray.

I've only ever put SACD SJB cases together, when supplied to me in their three component parts, so unfortunately can't directly offer much advice. I have though, and perhaps you also, taken quite a few ordinary CD jewel cases apart - and succesfully put them back together again. I'd like to think that the SACD cases would work similarly, but perhaps I'm being naiive. One thing I would recommend though, is do your best to make sure the case is not particularly cold. That should help to make sure it's not too brittle.

I hope I never get to this point, but would be interested to hear how you get on.

An excellent question. I broke a few trays when I started opening them up -- but I have found a successful methodddddd ....

* Removing the outside cover (with booklet)
It is usually best to remove the top outside cover first ... not essential ... you can just open the lid to fully open if you prefer .... but if you do remove the top cover, you can do so by opening the lid, and then pulling outwards on one hinged tab until it lifts out from the socket.

* Removing the tray to change artwork
Remove the disc so you don't have any accidents.
Place your thumbs at the positions marked with the arrows. Your thumbs will be on the outside of the box (the sides of the box), and your fingers will be underneath the box (near the top of the picture). Starting on the right side, pull downwards with your thumb, whilst pressing up with your fingers. The tray will pop out nicely. Do the same on the top left.

Once the top of the tray is free, you can wiggle the bottom two corners free ... carefully ... but it usually pops out without any breakage. That's it.

As I live in a far country from Amazons and others online stores many SJB arrive broken and there is no SJB cases to sell here!!

I always have success to open SJBs with a old pen point which have a longer set/point than usual. you can use other thin objet too.
I insert the pen point on the holes on the sade of the SJB and push on and to down. One have to be careful to not broke the plastics that is a very thin and low quality plastics.

A recipe to open all SJBs do not work, as everyone SJB have a different pressure fit even being same, due the plastic parts fit not equal.

I have been able to carefully pry apart the SJB's and remove the RF ID tags placed inside. Another bugbear is trying to remove those infernal "hybrid" stickers from the outside of cases without marring the plastic. Solvent will work on the glue if you can get the paper off the surface but I always seem to leave some scratches where I pick at the paper. I wonder if there is a correlation between collecting SACD's and OCD?

Not wishing to stray too far off topic, but...

Where to buy high quality jewel cases?

Specifically, where to by high quality dual disk plastic jewel cases? The type where a disk mounts on both sides of the inside tray and the tray's hinge is opposite the hinge of the exterior plastic jewel case.

For removing the "Hybrid" stickers on the outside of the Jewel case, I carefully removed the paper part of the sticker leaving the layer of glue, then I spray WD40 on a cotton ball and work it into the glue until it all comes off. Then I clean the case with Windex and a paper towel to remove the smell and feel of WD40.

A real PITA and I prefer they put the sticker on the outside of the shrink-wrap rather than directly on the case. Some come off easier than others, the worst ones are Telarc's as they use a really strong glue that is a real chore to remove!

They do not make the item you request. The inner tray is bound book-style, on the same left side as the lid.

You can find a "Fliptray" at this website:

Not to insult anyone but the standard CD tray can hold 2 discs on the spindle, which kinda obviates the need for a flip tray.

The discs should not rest on each other, since the center hub is a little fatter than the optical surface. I have read that when they press the discs they are stacked prior to going into jewel boxes.

Good links KRP - noted and saved.

However, I should have been more clear as I meant the standard old style plastic "CD" jewel cases. The hinges of the old style standard "CD" 2 disk trays get murdered in shipment everytime.

Indeed, the newer SJBox is more robust than the old CD case.
