I know that this thread is "silly" ... but 6000 sacds are a beautiful number and i hope to see and buy new releases every month for a long time.

If we continue to buy sacd (in the last 60 days i purchased 25 titles) this small market will never die.

Cheers from Italy,
roby

Agreed Canonical - it most definitely is a SACD

Let's not forget the upcoming Impulse SACD releases (and a slew of others) from Analogue Productions and I read somewhere where MoFi will be releasing at least 2 per month this coming year (but that may also include their 24k gold re-releases, as well). But sadly, of the 6000 listed on this site, how many are OOP and are fetching astronomical prices?

This is of course the true picture, If we had to take out all of the labels who have stopped production of SACD (Universal and all its offshoots for one) the large number of labels who have produced less than 10 SACD's and the fact that it is very rare for a SACD to be reissued as an SACD once the 1st pressing has run out presents a much more accurate picture. A stranger coming to this site would initially be pleased at the choice, but a little digging around would cause disallusionment especially amongst none classical music fans. I would estimate that at least 25%-30% of the listings are no longer available. This coupled with the almost invisible presence caused by a complete lack of publicity means that for me the title of this thread "6000 SA-CDs today" is pretty meaningless. The titles I am mostly intrested in are either not represented or deleted as SACD. To put it in context how many RBCDS were available after the first ten years of the that formats existence I am willing to belive that it was far more and varied than we SACD faithful have now

I think there is still hope as vinyl had all but disappeared but has made a robust resurgence in the last ten years. The only positive: Universal blu-ray players and now that SONY has re-entered that arena with a number of blu-ray and sacd compatible players the number of SACD compatible players is way healthier than it was ten years ago. I have always said to attract new advocates to the format, there HAS to be a balance of new releases in the rock and pop arena but sadly, that is not presently the case. As SACD is a niche format, so has classical music, in general been a niche format. I wish more POP recording artists were sensitive to SACD as it is way more versatile that the "way cool" vinyl format which is vinyl's perception among young collectors.....and sadly, again, most new pop and jazz releases are stereo only (unless one wants to include three-channel as multi-channel) which, to me, defeats the multi-channel versatility of SACD and would further enhance its superiority over vinyl, rbcd and even downloads. I wish SONY would follow 2L Productions blu-ray/sacd release in one package, perhaps starting a trend, but for that to happen we need more SACD pressing plants. With blu-ray movies dipping under the $10 [US] price range and the escalating pricing of SACDs, one could only hope for a minor miracle at this juncture in time, because in these economic times that is NO way to attract new customers.

Other than the fact that they're both shiny discs, movie prices have zero bearing on the cost of SA-CDs.

I'm afraid it's too costly to produce a blu-ray/SACD package but why not to simply release more Hybrid SACDs (they offer superior sonics in stereo and multichannel and can be played on SACD players, Universal players, DVD/SACD players, BD players* and CD players)?

*Sony has just announced their new 3D BD players with SACD playback (soon people will be migrating from old blu-ray players to 3D), Blu-ray audio ain't necessary anymore.

I am dedicated to both formats (blu and sacd) but my observation was aimed at newbies who would be mightily turned off by the disparity in pricing and the unavailability of older rock and pop titles fetching insane sums of money as OOP titles. One can never surmise what this schizophrenic market holds in store as Zeus himself complained about the garbage being released on blu-ray [yes, there are some masterpieces but they're eclipsed by the B and C and even F titles flooding the fledgling format]. As I type this, Susan Boyle's RBCD is number 1 in the states on the Billboard charts.....who would've thought? The public is becoming increasingly fickle and will spend their dollars when something "special" surfaces but the thought of Susan Boyle in a negligee doing a music video is way too much for this Yankee to bear! Can't wait for her rendition of "Am I BLU!"

DEJA-VU...

I stumbled upon this note in the Gramophone archives, August 1984:

"The complaint noted in these columns ... that the repertoire on CD, though growing, is still inadequate, is already beginning to weaken. Indeed, older collectors have been quick to point out that it is much greater in diversity and range than in the corresponding period in the history of the LP when the companies were so adventurous, But there have been a number of rarities in recent months and such smaller firms as BIS/ Conifer have announced quite a number of first recordings...."
