This is fantastic news, they are churning out SACD's at a rate similar to LSO Live and of course there is a common link in James Mallinson. I hope that they will include some Prokofiev as well as the more mainstream Russian repertory.

Boston have gone ominously quiet after their inaugural launch discs, hope that does not imply second thoughts after poor sales?

If james is on SA-CD.net, may I ask what other treats you have in store for us this autumn from the Mariinsky?

Well, Tchaikovsky´s 1812 wasn´t quite what I was hoping for as their next release.

But I must certainly agree with many here, Shostakovich´s 1 and 15 is A TRULY STUNNING SACD in every respect that I can think of, both musically and also a VERY GOOD example of what this format is capable of in true realism.

Someone here mentioned a negative review of that disc at Classics Today?

I have not seen it yet.
But ever since I first saw, and heard Shostakovich´s 7th under Gergiev at the BBC Proms and later some equally stunning live performances and rehearsals at the Baltic Sea Festival in Stockholm, I am really happy that he is finally getting his fantastic orchestra recorded both in true HI REZ sound quality and a marvelous acoustic.
Last years live Elektra in Stockholm was simply fantastic.

And Yes, some Prokofiev would be great.
But not so likely with his recent LSO LIVE set only a year or two old?

Or maybe? since it was only released as RBCDs in pretty horribly contained closed in boxy sound too.Hopefully also some Mussorgsky!
Maybe we will even get a Boris Goudunov on SACD ?

Now that would be quite something IMHO.

All the best Chris

In December we will get Rodion Schedrin's The Enchanted Wanderer from Mariinsky. And early next year Romeo and Juliet by Prokofiev from LSO Live, both with Gergiev.

Carumbah! Shchedrin is a most intriguing composer ... wonderful name too .... sounds like an excellent expletive.
I have his wonderful 24 Preludes and Fugues (with him playing the piano) + polyphonic notebook, some violin sonatas and cello sonatas, and his Violin Concerto.

So I'm in!

Just noticed that this is also available on SACD: might give it a try too :)

Nice release! The Mariisky Site do not inform if this disc was recorded in PCM or DSD. Iam assuming it was a new post 1999 recording.
Someone know how Mariinsky use recording his SACDs. If it was a low rate PCM I will let it pass.

It was recorded in DSD last winter. The cannon shots will have you ducking. It is that realistic, especially in MC.

Also check out the sound of the new Strauss: Alpine Symphony.

Strauss: Alpine Symphony, Macbeth - Janowski

All done by the same technical people as the Mariinsky.

Oh my Voice Coils...
Thanks Tom, I will wait this release, I already put it in my WishList. I like Gergiev, the Russian conductors use to be great.

I am sure it is a new recording in DSD. James Mallinson has been true to DSD with LSO Live even 'though many of those recordings were never released as SACD's but as Chaz said on here a few months back, it is an option for them in future.

Hi Tom

Have you any info on what's happening next with BSO Live if anything?

John
